First Visit to the Groomer I was a little disappointed with Sophie's first visit to the groomer. I took her to Petsmart. They did a great job, but they would not cut any of the hair on her back or legs. They said she shouldn't have her hair cut until she was an adult because it would ruin her adult hair. They have a puppy special (up to 5 months of age) just to get them use to going to the groomer. They trimmed the hair around her feet, face, and bum...and of course, she got the cute little bow. It was only $15.00, so I guess I can't complain, but she is getting so shaggy. ha They must have used some special conditioner because she was very soft afterwards. Is the 'cutting puppy hair will ruin their adult hair' speal true? If so, at what age should they begin? (Sophie's 3 1/2 months.) |
I don't think so???..it's a;ready out..how can it effect what's going on at the hair follicle..I'm no expert but I had Maximus taken to the groomer at 4 months and they just trimmed because he was looking like a crazy man..lol..his coat is so thick..now almost a month later and I can see his adult coat coming in..it so shiny at the top of his head..lol...I hope that means silky.. |
The first day we had Katia we took her to the groomers. Matter of fact that is how she got her name, the groomer was a very pretty girl named Katia. I'm sure they cut her hair on her back though. Also, brush it daily and it looks 10 times better without the cutting. Anyone know how often we should take them to the groomers? |

I bet your puppy looks cute ...it's better to cut to little than too much |
I had heard that you should wait until 6 mos to cut their hair because it will grow back coarse...but i agree with luzangela428, i don't understand why. I am getting Gracie the puppy package at Petsmart saturday, do you think your pup looked any different or is it not noticable at all?? Cause if it is not noticiable I think I would be a little disappointed to...I could bathe her and put a bow in her hair for free :) |
Bunny is going for her first grooming and we are also going to Petsmart bc they are the only place in town that will let me stay and hold her on the table. Every single other place said that I would have to leave her for a few hours! I don't think so! AND... I don't want anything around her neck... she is a defiant little one and I am really afraid that anything they placed around her neck to help restrain her could turn into a noose if the groomer got distracted even for a second. I am not going to have them do anything to her body except the hygeine shave on her bum and the pads of her feet. The main reason I am taking her in is bc I want those ears cleaned out and I want her to get in the habit of "having her hair done". |

They told me this in grooming school. For some reason the hair will not grow back the same until they are older. I really dont remeber why though. The teachers just said do not cut the back hair unless the owner demands it be done. |

I agree. I can bathe her, brush her, and do the bow thing, too. ha But....they did trim the hair around her eyes, which would make me a tad nervous to do myself. I could tell a small difference in her looks after the visit. Was it worth 15 bucks?? hmmmm .... I guess so. I guess it does get the puppy some exposure to strangers handling them. Also, she seemed quite calm there, and I think she would be more hyper if I had been trimming her hair. I say go for it. It was a nice experience. Had I realized it wasn't a full "groom," I probably wouldn't have been so disappointed. |
A petsmart that lets you remain and hold your dog? Lucky you! My Petsmart didn't even want me anywhere near the store until I needed to pick him up. Our first trip there was sort of disappointing in the same way others have described. I think I expected more...I too would like to know how often they should go to the groomer. They told me every 8 weeks is that the norm? |
As far as how often to take them... I let them clip the hair around Tino's eyes when he had his first grooming and this was always the first thing that grew out and it was making it so that I had to have a monthly grooming appt. I stopped letting them use clippers on his face and let the hair grow out between his eyes so I can put it up in a nice topknot and now we can go soooo much longer btw appts. I also clip his nails at home too and that was one of the main things I would have them do. |
Oh, yes, the main reason I went to Petsmart is they let me stay there while they groomed her. I didn't need to hold her, but I sat right there, and she watched me the whole time. It eased my mind that I didn't have to leave her with strangers....even though I know....hope....the groomers are professionals and wouldn't mistreat her. |
I clip Coco short for the summer around her back, legs and neck...EEEKKK does that mean her hair won't grow out right as an adult...HELP!!! WHAT HAVE I DONE! I didn't shave her but just clipped her, is that different???? |

If you want her coat to grow out then yes I would just have them do the basics like bath and good conditioning. Inside secret, spring for the milk bath or the deep conditioning treatment if they offer it. The shampoos that most groomers use really aren't the greatest. If you dont want to pay that extra cost ask them to bath with an oatmeal shampoo and if you have to lie and tell them that the dog has allergies. Oatmeal wont dry out the coat as much as a regular shampoo. If you are getting a cut done take a pic and if possible try to take a large enough pic of the cut that you want. It s very hard to tell what kind of cut you want when the pic is the size of the avatar here. |

I personally even though I am a groomer would NEVER leave my dog with the groomer without making a surprise visit. I do not want to panic anyone here but there are some really mean groomers out there. I have a lab that comes in for baths every month and his dad told me that when he would take max to the old groomer it was like he was taking him in to be murdered. But now that max comes to me, his dad can almost open the truck door and max will run right in to me. He loves me. But I love him to. I always treat the dogs taht come to me as if they were my own. I think all groomers should be like that. But sad to say they arent. Be careful and ask for references. |
The lady that grooms Teddy is a very nice lady. The first time he was groomed he did wonderfully for them but I did that time leave the store. The next time however I wanted to just hang around to see the process and he saw me and got really strung out to the point she accidently knicked his nose. She felt horrible and I felt even worse so she suggested to me that it would probably be easier for him to not see me if possible. She didn't out right tell me I had to leave but I personally felt that I didn't want this to become something unpleasant for him and being there is that super large window I didn't see anyway that he wouldn't see me. I should have clarified that better in my first post. |
Oh ok. I can understand then. Makes sense. I also wanted to add my email to this post just incase some one has a grooming question that they want answered right away. I sometimes dont check alot of the posts on here and really want to help out where I can when it comes to this subject. My email is: compassionatecanines@yahoo.com feel free to email me. Let me know who you are on here too if you would please so I know. |
Your thoughts and advice are very much appreciated! I think for many of us the grooming process is something we know little if anything about until we are actually faced with it and even then it is still rather confusing. Thanks so much for your help to make this a little easier to understand as I have read your other posts on this thread and they were very helpful to me. |

I don't know about the adult coat, but this I do. Maggie went to the groomer at 4 months. She got a puppy cut which included trimming of all hair, ear hair plucked, lower tummy fuzz shaved, nails, scissor cut on head, face and paws. Her groomer only charged me $10. I for sure couldn't argue with that. I was very pleased, since she was having a major case of spriggly hair. |

So we took a day - just me and her - and we went and cold called on 4 different NEW groomers and I let her walk around - meet them - then we left ...after doing this she got over her fear of leaving in the car AND she went to a nice groomer and though she didn't do a great job either - I know I can trust her - We are STILL looking for a good groomer ...Chanel is 3 now - does that tell you anything about how HARD it is to find a good one ? In the meantime - I groom them myself. |
I wouldn't do it. The hair can also grow back uneven. |

will you consider coming to NYC and grooming my baby!! :D ha wishful thinking ... a lot of places ive seen around nyc suggest the owner not be present due to distractions... i can completely understand that but i just dont feel comfy leaving him alone ... would you by chance know of any good groomers in nyc? by chanceeeee?????? :aimeeyork  |
Noah had his first trip to the groomer last wednesday, and I was so nervous all day before hand. You see, my fiance had dropped him off since I got tied up at work. Well apparently the lady at the front desk doesn't follow directions because my fiance told me that he told them to keep him how he was just a little shorter. So when I go to pick my baby up, I wanted to cry. He looks NOTHING like he did when I saw him earlier that morning. They cut my poor baby boy like a schnouzer (no idea how to spell that). He has absolute no fur left. I miss my rough, scruffy puppy. I get upset looking at pictures from before because I can't help but think about how he is supposed to look. I know it will grow out in no time, but I am still upset about it. He has no hair above his eyes at all. I will try to post before and after pictures when I get the chance so you all can see what I am talking about. He looks like a completely different puppy. I still love him the same, but just can't help but hate his first hair cut. :( |
