Cold Weather Not sure if I should post this here, but its something I have been wondering now that its getting a lot colder. It might be a dumb question, but I was always told the only dumb question is the one not asked. So here goes, can yorkies get sick from being out in the cold with out proper attire? Can they get the flu or similiar ailments and such like humans during the winter months? Can they get frostbite? The reason I ask these questions is that I have noticed that Toby starts to shiver after only being outside a few minutes lately since its regularly been down to the 40-50s. As the weather has changed, I have started putting him in shirts and coats to help him stop shivering but I don't think its enough. I don't really have anything that covers his butt or legs or head and I don't want him to get sick. So what I have been doing when I have to take him to the car from the house or from work is wrapping him in a blanket. But I want something that will keep him warm when we go on our walks as it gets colder. I mean this is just brink of how cold it can get around here. We usually hit the teens regularly by winter and I can't imagine how cold he'll be then if I can't find anything. I have seen boots but they don't seem to go far up his legs. What do you guys do in the winter for your furbabies to keep them warm? Do you stop taking them on walks? I would like to know what you guys do. Also one possiblity I was thinking was that I could look for some baby sleepers or snow suits at goodwill and cut holes in the apporpriate areas. |
I think they can get colds from being outside in the cold for too long. London had a cold once and i had to take her to the vet and get antibiotics. It's better to put a sweater and jacket on them. |
Ive seen somewhere where they sell snowsuits I think it was fido fleece. If it is colder than 30 degrees I usually dont take mine on walks. Thats mainly though because I dont like to be out when its colder than that. Yorkies have hair not fur so you do have to bundle them up |

Thanks for the info! I will have to check out the Fido Fleece website. |
You (generally-speaking) don't get sick from the cold. You get sick from the virus. People assume that they get sick from the cold weather, when it's actually that you're inside more and thus in contact with more people, including those who are infected. /health lesson. :p http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/dogflu.asp |
Wow, never knew that. Kinda scary. Thanks for the info. |
2 Attachment(s) I don't worry about a minute or two of light shivering, but if it doesn't stop, it's time to warm them up. Definitely get some warm clothes. If you get snow, get some comfortable booties. The main thing to do is to keep them moving. If they're generating heat, they're not going to get cold. They can get frostbite. Here's our ultra-cold gear. I've had them out comfortably for 20 minutes at 5 below. |

You don't get colds from the cold weather, you get colds from being exposed to them..if he/shes just going out to use the bathroom real quick, and then coming back in, can't see buying a coat or snowsuit |
its starting to get cold here too i need to start making some things |

Where did you get their ultra cold gear? I know I will definitely have to get some booties. He's not a huge fan of rain so I have a feeling he's not gonna like stepping in snow. |
Its getting cold here in too. I have been shopping at petsmart and target for a jacket and sweaters for Rockie. He is still adjusting to the clothes thing though:p Oh well when its cold its cold:animal36 |

I got bella and mickey fleece coats and i have seen hats and scarfs:rolleyes: was also wondering the same thing about them catching the flu or something. |
It is getting really cold here in Ireland. I dont really put anything on mine in the winter, they dont like clothes. But I thin k it depends on the dog themselves. Im lucky to get Missy to go pee in cold weather (she would rather do it in the house than go out in the cold). Boots, well she'll go anywere in any kind of weather, hail rain or snow. LOL. So I guess it depends on the dog. And I had to look twice as well to see if that fly was real. Do you mind, but im gona steal it. Hehe. |
