Attention Owners of Yorkies 3 lb and Under I have had Yorkies for 17 years. I was wondering how long those of you who have tiny yorkies (under 3 lb) have lived. My vet claims they hardly ever live nearly as long as larger yorkies do. The smallest one I've ever had before was 4 1/2 lb. She died at 12 years old. My Feather is almost 7 months old and still only weighs 2 1/4 lb. I know sometimes the tinies have liver or other health problems. So far she's an excellent eater and seems healthy. TIA |
This would be intersting to know since Dakotas around 3 lbs. |
Diggy too he is like 3.5-4 |
Ive never heard of them having a smaller lifespan unless they have health problems |
little ones I would think statistically its true but just because a accident that may just wound a larger yorkie will kill a tiny. A broken leg can be to tiny to fix, a fall or bump can cause death instead of a "what was that about head skake". So I doubt the health thing plays a huge part, just more the tiny size dangers. |
age I have never found my tinies lived any less years then other size Yorks when well cared for...making sure they get good dental care contributes a long life. I used to groom and you would not believe how many owners neglected teeth...the problem with the tinies is they do not have the reserves to fight off many illnesses..so prevention is best... |
I think that another thing is that the very small yorkies (under 3 lbs full grown) are often that small due to a serious medical condition. So when you look at the statistics, you would see a decrease in the life span when you factor this in. Obviously this isn't always the case, some are very healthy. Lily is around 1.5 - 2.0 lbs. She is small due to hydrocephalus and MVD. She will not have a long life but it will be a happy one :) |
13 pounder less healthy than 3 pounder! My BIG girl, Roxy is about 13lbs. We have spent $1000's on her health. She started having seizures at 2 months old and it's been no stop ever since. ultrasounds, fevers, trembling, Pheno Barb, Conifite for her yeast infection in her one ear. I saved every bill, I have spent more on this little girl in the last 3 years then I have on all three of my human boys!!! My good friend has a 3-4 pounder and she has not had one problem with her. She even eats table food, can you imagine?! Oh, she did have a reaction to the flea stuff! In my opinion If your yorkie is healthy, they will be fine no matter what size. Roxy's Mom, Maria |

Tiffany is 2 lb. 5 oz... so far she hasnt had any major problems! I hope it stays that way. I cant imagine being without my baby! ;) |
Gizmo is 2.8 lbs and he is 8 years old. His only problem is those darn teeth even with constant care! Other than that he's going strong. |
maltese I have a yard guy who has a 25yr old maltese that is tiny...only 2lbs... not a yorkie but gives you hope right? |
2 Attachment(s) I too worry about this as Tara (4 pounds) is seven and a half now. The vet said she wouldn't make four as she had such a bad collapsed trachea, but she has been ok, and only showing a bit more wheezing due to her throat recently. I also notice it in her eyes this year....they are getting mildly foggy, and she moans a lot now as if she has sore bones ! Apart from that she can fair run if she wants to, and is such a treasure to me, I will die myself if anything happens to her ! Out of my three, Tara 7.5, Casper 5, and Tammy 4, Tara is the one nearest to my soul....she knows just what I am thinking.:) I am hoping she lives to 17 ! :animal-pa Debra (Tara is my avatar pic on left;) ) pic 1: Tara age 7.5 years pic 2: Tara, Casper,Tammy. |
Well Izzy is 10 mos (almost 11) and still 2 pounds 8 ounces. She is very healthy (knock on wood). :-) Never had a problem with her and hope it stays that way. She came from a great breeder who wouldn't let her go until 5 mos to make sure she was healthy.....cause she was so tiny. |
tumi is 3.5lb..i hope she can be with us for a long time..she's such a healthy little energizer bunny..i can't think about not having her in my life..everytime i think about stuff like that i can't help but cry..my hubby thinks i am a big baby |
