New to YT and new to Yorkies.
 

Hi there,

My name is Sarah. I'm new to the forum. Hi everyone.

A bit about myself: I'm 23 and live in Los Angeles. My boyfriend and I have adopted a 16 month old Yorkie from a rescue shelter. We are picking him up today. We decided that adoption was the best route for us. It is a lot less expensive than a breeder, and it helps to give an animal a home. I jumped at finding a purebred Yorkie who is young, but past the puppy stage. He is already neutered, crate trained, and 95% housebroken (I was told the he doesn't forget to potty outside as long as I don't forget that he needs to potty outside). I'm excited, seeing as how my last dog (an American Bulldog) was a nightmare during puppyhood!

I'm sure that in the days to come I will have a lot of unexpected questions. It's really nice to find that a place like this exists.

One quick question to start: I am looking at crates. My last dog weighed in at 110lbs. and so there were not really many crate options. Jesse is only 5.5lbs. and so the options are seemingly endless. The Midwest Canine Camper seems amazing to me. I like the way it looks, and that it's foldable and easy to travel with. I'm lucky that I have a job that allows me to bring my dog to work, and so I like the idea of a crate that is easy to bring from place to place. Plus, it can also serve as an airline carrier. My main concern is durability. Is it safe to have a crate with mesh screens/doors? I worry that he may chew his way out while left alone. Also, I am unsure of sizing. He is 5.5lbs. 12"x10"x10" seems like it may be a touch small, but 18"x15"x16" seems big.

Thank you for any advice about the crate (or anything else you want to mention to a new Yorkie owner). I look forward to getting to know all of you.

:welcome4: Glad you found YT! This is a terrific site & so much fun! I am not familiar with the MidWest Crate - although, I'm looking for something similar to travel with - so thanks for the idea.

The positives of this is that it would be great for travel, but I would ask would it be as sturdy as what you want at home and how easy would it be to clean if there was an accident or just from the wear & tear of everyday use.

Hi, I just bought a crate very similar to the midwest crate that you posted. I purchased one at Wal-Mart. I bought it to just keep at work (I am able to take her to work) and it has worked very well for me and Abby. It is very sturdy and she has chewed on it but you cannot tell where she chews. She has not been left alone in it but for about 2 hours. Abby's crate is 18x12x12 and it is plenty of room for her.

Welcome!!! Congrats on saving a life!!! I bet he is so much more at ease! As far as carriers, Airlines are really specific. I am getting ready to fly back to the states soon and had to do a lot of research on this. I agree with you I would be worried about a him chewing through it. That or the nails digging at it.

Might look into a regular crate, or I have petsflys for mine.
