Hi everyone, Im new! Hello, my name is Elizabeth and my yorkies name is Fabio! Were new here and have a few questions to start! Hope you can help! My yorkie seems to choke alot. It seems like hes going to cough something up but never does. He just hacks for a while and then stops. Should I be worried about this? It sounds bad when he does it. Does anyone else have this problem? Also, What human foods are ok to feed my yorkie? Thanks everyone! |
welcome to YT! |
that is something to worry bout it might be a callapsing trechea (did i spell that right??) oh and welcome to yorkietalk:D |
thanks! Thanks, yea Ive heard alot about that and that I should be worried about it! We dont know how old Fabio is because we adopted him and everyone has told us a different age, so I need to look out for him much more because of that! But I need to read some more info about colapsing treacha (sp?) |
Hi Elizabeth (love the name Elizabeth) and welcome to Yorkie Talk. I know you are going to be so happy being a member of this site. I don't have any answer to the question on why Fabio is doing this, have you consulted your vet about it? Prayerfully it isn't anything serious. That was wonderful of you to adopt Fabio. I think a vet could generally give you an idea as to his age. Patti and Jack and girls say us too :animal36 :animal36 :animal36 |
Yea, the lady where we adopted him told us five, one vet told us ten and another five. So I went with five! He seems younger because he has alot of spunk! And he looks young as well. I dont know alot about yorkies because this is my first one but I read up about him before I got him! The vet did tell us about the treacha problems all yorkies have. He just started the choking so i havent had a chance to go back to the vet for it. He doesn't do it often, just periodically. But Thanks yall for the welcome! I am happy to join |
Welcome!! It sounds like a possible collapsing trachea, which can be minor or more serious. I have had 3 out of 5 yorkies with it. 2 had it mildly and 1 severe. Your vet should be able to tell what it is. |
:yorkietal WELCOME TO ELIZABETH AND FABIO :yorkietal So glad that you joined our happy little family. Can't wait to see pics and get to know the both of you. |
Hi Elizabeth. Welcome to YT. It's great that you chose to adopt. I have five Yorkies or I should say three Yorkies and two Yorkie mixes. Three of mine are rescues, one of which I just got a couple of months ago. This is it for us. We got the little one after losing our ten year old Yorkie to cancer. My ten year old that recently passed, had a collapsing trachea and he did do this from time to time. In case you were not told this PLEASE ONLY USE A HARNESS on your baby. You should never use a collar on him. This puts more pressure on the trachea. Small breeds are suseptable to collapsing tracheas and harnesses are reccomended whether you have problems already or not. As far as human foods to feed you can search and look for them here on YT. One thing for sure is you should avoid wheat and corn at least for now because many Yorkies have allergies to these two things. A quick note on what I feed my guys; I feed them (dry kibble) Chicken Soup For a Dog Lover's Soul and I free feed them, meaning I leave it out all day for them to nibble on. I also feed them a wet food at night for dinner. I make my own. Home cooking is pretty big here on YT and you can find many recipes. I simply boil chicken breast in a large pot of water, and with a small chicken buillon cube. I let it simmer for a couple of hours after boiling, then I had carrots and cook them. After I chop the chicken up in tiny bits and mash the carrots, and I add some brown rice. I make it like a can of wet dog food would look like. I mix this in with the dry kibble at night. They love it. Again, congrats on adopting. Elaine |
Hi and welcome to YT! |
Hello Elizabeth and Fabio! Welcome to YT!:animal36 |
1st of all welcome to YT! It sounds like Fabio might have an irritated trachea or reverse sneezing, your vet will certainly confirm or deny it and advise you if necessary! People foods I feed Jasper that meet my vets approval: cottage cheese, hard cheese, hamburg@rice,boiled chicken @ rice, lean beef roast, carrots, bananas, carrot sticks, meat sticks by Gerber babyfood, scrambled or soft boiled eggs @ toast! |

Hi and welcome to YT! Hope you enjoy it here! |
Welcome to YorkieTalk. It sounds like collapsing trachea or reverse sneezing. When he goes into an episode you could try putting her hand over his nose for a second or two. If that doesn't stop it I would assume it is not reverse sneezing and he needs to see a vet. There are plenty of foods Yorkies can have. I would AVOID giving chocolate, grapes, raisins, macadamia nuts, onions, garlic (in large amounts), mushroom, salty foods, meat with lots of fat... Some healthy snacks are boiled chicken, egg, banana, peeled apple, watermelon, green beans and potato (peeled and cooked) to name a few. |
