confused about hair in the ears
 
:confused: I'm a bit confused, ive read that the hair growing inside the ear should be plucked out otherwise they may get an ear infection?
Buddy has a mass of hair inside his ear, is the inside of his ear supposed to be completely clear of hair?
Also where i live most of his walks are through woods and fields and he's constantly covered in seedy grass head bits, that i have to sit and pick out of him (not as bad as it sounds its quite theraputic! :) ) but i'm worried that if he had no hair inside his ears to 'catch' any grass seeds, wouldnt they just go straight down deeper into his ear and cause more problems?

yes ...it SHOULD be plucked - some people can do it themselves but I have a good groomer do my girls....the inside should be free of hair - the outer ears tipped 1/3 from the top so you can see those cute little ears peeking thru the hair.

thanks villette, think i'll book him in for a groomer to do it for me to start with, he does need a bit of a tidy up i suppose although the furry tipped ears are staying..lol i know its odd but i love floppy ears so i want the weight left to keep them ears down! lol the underneath of his paws definitely need sorting u can look at his paws and not be certain what way up they are they are soooo hairy, he's learnt to break early if he's running on my downstairs wooden floor to allow for his long skid! lol
I think ive got a particularly fluffy baby boy :)

How cute. But now when you get him groomed his timing is going to be all off. There's going to be like a week where he breaks too soon then he has to walk a couple more feet because he didn't quite get far enough. lol

Sorry but I've gotta disagree about the plucking. If he's not heading for the show ring, but into the grass seeds, I would leave the inside ear alone. It will help keep nasty stuff out, but if you're not trimming his tips to try and keep the flop, be extra sure to check the inside thoroughly every day for problems.

What age should they start getting ears plucked?? As painful as it sounds for little Dublin, ne of my other dogs had an ear infection once, and I'd hate to go through that again...

Either pluck them yourselves or a groomer or vet could do it. It's important to keep the area clear and clean.

Hi all ... i had my vet do it once and HE CRIED SOOOOOO LOUD my ears were echoing for a long time. ive tried doing it at home but im afraid its going to be to painful. :cry:

does anyone have a pic of how a clean ear looks like? that would be of great help to me. thanks all :)

its not just cosmetic though is it?? i dont understand how having hairs in them can cause an ear infection? :confused:
I clean the inside of his ears every day but he has had an ear infection already but the vet thought it was caused by a grass seed, but this is what i'm struggling to understand, why would plucking hairs stop ear infections, couldnt it make things worse?? very confused :confused:

I was looking for another thread and came accross this. I am interested in some info about this topic. Why does hair in the ears constitute infections? How often does this need to done? How on earth could anyone do this themselves??? If I go anywhere near Chewy's ears he's practically biting me. LOL. Also, my vet told me i could clean Chewy's ears with a mixture of white vinegar and water (more water) and a drop of tea tree oil. Just wipe around with cotton or tissue. Has anyone else heard this?

I pluck both Missy & Max's ears. Its really easy and they dont mind at all, I've made it part of their weekly grooming and they are used to it.

Maggie's ears were really stinking a couple months ago. I took her to the vet and he said she had a lot of hair down in the canal, which caused excessive wax build up, which caused stinky. Hair is now gone, and I can actually kiss her on the side of the head without gagging.

The vet did it at his last appointment, he yelped and cried when the vet did it. and acted like a sweet little angel with his shots. It kind of creeped me out, :eek: I think I am going to leave to it the vets and groomers.

I don't know why it was so important but the vet said it was, and also gave me ear cleaner to keep them squeaky clean inside.

I don't pluck . What do is , I use one of those nosehair electric shavers? I trim it down and keep it pretty clear.Cookie's ears are cleaner than mine. I swear everytime I clean his ears ,the Q-tips come out white. Now Mimi is another story ! lol Her ears get a little bit dirty and clean them with Q-tips as well.

Yeah its supposed to be plucked out. I didnt know either and my baby chloe got a bad ear infection :( You can have a groomer do it unless your brave enough to do it yourself. CHloe screamed but supposedly they get used to it a little more after time. Regardless, it still needs to get done wether they like it or not. :aimeeyork
