Hello everyone! I have had my yorkie Layla for about 8 months and I am having a hard time with her. I have never owned a small dog before (always had labradores). I was searching for answeres to questions online when I found and joined your community. I am hoping to learn to better care for my little princess. I can't seem to get her to quit eating any type of paper product she can find and she has expensive taste in high heels as I only have a couple pairs left (she loved the heel). She has also chewed all my daughters flip flops. She pees and poos all over the house (I let her out many times a day). And worst of all, her poor hair keeps getting matted especially on her legs. I had her shaved twice already which broke my heart! When I try to brush her thoroughly she flips out. If anyone can help with any of this I would so appreciate it! I love my princess and want her to be happy healthy and beautiful!!!:animal-pa

Welcome to yt. Can't help you with the paper chewing - mine loves that too. She has been difficult to completely house train but knock on wood, she has had no accidents in a week or two now. I'm so excited! :p But she is 9 months old so it's been a long haul. If you do a search, you will find a lot of good advice out there. I would say just be patient and hopefully things will click for her. We crate Zoe at nite so there are no accidents at all and she is crated when I am not home. Usually, when she had an accident, it was near the front door so I think she's had the right idea for awhile. Just doesn't know how to tell me she needs to go out and couldn't hold it. As for matting, I bath Zoe about every 4-5 days and use emu oil in a cup of warm water as a final rinse. It works wonders for me but the first day, her hair does look a little greasy. I do not brush at all inbetween and have none or very little matting. If I go longer than 5 days in between, I will have some matting but not too much. Now, I don't know if your baby is silky or cottony because I think that makes a difference so don't know if this would work for you. Good luck and hope others post some good advice for you. :)

Welcome to YT! Where in Indiana are you? I'm in Noblesville. You might try searching on YT for threads re: potty training. I've heard that they can be harder to train than some other breeds. Consistency and praise are very important. I've read about some people who keep their pups on a leash inside to keep them close to them so that they can supervise them and catch them when they start to potty inside and immediately take them outside and then praise them when they go outside. Good luck and I'm sure you'll get lots of great advice on here.

Welcome to YT! Have you tried Crate training or put her lead attached to you, so that way you can keep a close eye on her. This is what I have been doing with Cozmo ( he's a rescue) and will be 2 years in Jan. But it is working. He only gets to play when he has gone potty outside. Yes, Consistency is the word. Deiter was easy, he was potty trained by 6 mons old. Good luck.

TJDmom, I had never heard of a cottony. That would probably explain why my yorkie is fluffy and not silky. I thought it was her baby hair or something. I kept waiting for it to get silky haha. I crate her at night and when I am not home. She was doing well but lately she is going in her crate. I left today for 3 hours and she peed. I took her out right before I left. I have heard they only pee in their crate if they are ill. I am going to call the vet tomorrow. I bathe her once or twice a week but, feel as though she needs it more cause she walks in her pee in her crate then her paws get yucky. Anyway, thanks for your help talk to you later.

welcome to YT! I am in Fishers...good luck with your baby..its real hard at first sometimes, but you will wake up one day and she will amaze you. Be pesistent and patient.

The good news is that this, too, shall pass. Archie was still giving me a run for my money on all fronts at this age. The potty-training is sometimes tough -- I've got no advice there except to praise her extravagantly when she does the right thing and try rewarding with treats. As for the shoes -- Archie never got the chance to chew them up because I didn't leave them laying around for a long time -- now that he's more than a year-and-a-half old, I can leave my shoes all over and he doesn't touch them.

For a long time Archie wouldn't let me brush him, but I started by giving him a treat, then beginning to brush him and tell him how pretty he is and repeating "Good boy to let Mommy brush!" When I finished, I would give him another treat and repeat "Good boy to let Mommy brush!" I did this consistently for several days. Today, all I have to do is say "Mommy brush!" or show him his brush and he jumps into my lap and he LOVES to get brushed. :p

Hi. Sounds like you have a 'normal' yorkie puppy! Congrats, they can be a challenge, but they are so worth it.

Welcome to YorkieTalk. If she is chewing on paper and shoes, I guess those will have to be picked up and the house will have to be puppy proofed. I think (as miserable as doing that will be) that is the only way. Maybe you could confine her to a room or two? How about getting an xpen and leaving her in there in less she is 100% supervised?

Potty training in Yorkies is difficult. What method are you using? My Yorkie pees in her crate and she isn't sick, so I wouldn't worry too much about that (unless this isn't like her). Since dogs are supposed to be confined to the smallest crate possible (just big enough to turn around and lay down in) for potty training, I would wonder if the crate you have is too big. Mine even went in a small carrier though, so this method doesn't work for every dog. Ellie is six and still poops in the house all the time.:rolleyes: That's a Yorkie for you.

Ellie also used to mat up (I didn't brush her often though). She was shaved down and that doesn't happen anymore. Now is gets cut about every two months. She doesn't have a normal Yorkie coat. I think it is a mix of cotton and silky. Anyway, now that she is an adult I brush her probably once a year with no problems.:)
