Even though I don't have my pup yet I have been all over the web reading & decided I was going to click train Hannah. I read one article on nail clipping with click training. Hold you pup & massage each one of her paws. When she does you click & treat each time. It emphasized dogs dogs don't mind the front paws as much as the back paws. You may be able to do this already. Then its says to let the clippers touch the paw & let it set a minute so they see it don't hurt them. As soon as they let you touch with the clippers, just click & treat. Even if you don't click train, maybe just having the clippers & have your pup get used to that, they won't be so scared with lots of treats to go along with it. |
I recommend the hooman start massaging thee puppy's feet and legs from day 1. Gently with occasional more firm strokes. I use the same type clipper Stacy does..Clipper often and take off only the very tip til you have the hang of it. Don't spaz out or your baby will sense it..Try doing only a few nails at a time and start with the front ones. They seem to jump and push off on their back legs enough to wear the back ones down a bit. The front ones are more important so do them first. I have tried the Dremel tool-major disaster here. My pack went flying everywhere so we will continue the clippers. Another thing--ALWAYS check the legs/paws to make sure your baby does NOT have dew claws. I have seen them curling and growing back into the flesh..If a puppy has them, no prob. Keep them clipped and have the vet remove them when the dog is anesthetized for altering and dentals.. |
most dogs that I have dealt with dont mind the back paws being clipped but they do mind the front paws. this goes for my dogs also. |
Gucci freaks when I try to clip her nails. I just take the clippers out and she runs and hide. I have tried when she is sleeping and after one nail she is up. so i have yo wait or continue the next time she is asleep. I have my son help me holding her and we both end up all scratch because she tries to escape. I do massage her paws and she allows me too, but as soon she sees the clippers she turns into cujo. Im going to ask my vet to clip her nails next visit cause in the last couple of months i think I have being succesful to trim her nails once and it was a huge task. |

Thanks to all the experienced yorkie moms who posted here. I bought a nail clipper yesterday and was sweating bullets until I went online and browsed around YT to see if someone ever posted the how to's on nail clipping. Well, it was a succes!!!! I was rubbing her paws and she was laying in my lap. I did tiny clips because I didn't want her first nail clipping with me to be traumatic :) We went trhough all nails like a breeze. She slept afterwards! Thanks guys! |

Kimberly- Just like Pat said in her post, the first several times I clipped Tino & Bunny's nails, I just took off the very tip that was starting to curl. It was a teeny teeny bit, but at least it was a start and sometimes I would have to go back over the nail to clip it a little shorter, but that was after I got the hang of it! |
My puppy squirms and gets away everytime. I now have a friend hold him while I do it and he is fine. I have to take my beagle to the vet because he is deadly afraid but the vet has no problems. LITTLE STINKER :rolleyes: |
