New yorkie owner We got our first yorkie puppy 3 weeks ago. Pippin has brought a lot of joy to our lives, but I didn't realize how fragile a yorkie puppy can be. I have to watch him with our older lab mix because he thinks it's ok to try and take Beau's toys, and he's gotten snapped at. Also, we just had a terrible experience outside. My daughter was holding him and he quickly twisted his body to get down and fell out of my daughters arms. It happened 15 minutes ago and we both feel sick to think how quickly he could have gotten hurt. I couldn't part with him now, but if I had it to do over again I don't know if I would have chosen such a small breed. |
Welcome! All yorkies are fragile as pups. I have an 11lb yorkie and hes not fragile at all. Best of luck with your new pup |
Welcome! I agree with Chachi..all pups are fragile. My baby boy weighs in at 5lbs, and he's tough as nails. He routinely gets tossed onto the bed (he loves it, I don't know why) and he comes back for more. You're going to be surprised at just how rough and tumble these little guys are once yours matures a bit. Again, welcome to YT. It's a :animal-pa :animal-pa home away from home here! |
Yorkie pups sure are squirmy. Layla has been dropped as well by my young cousin... but she is fine... we think :p dont' worry... i'm sure she will be stepped on a few times too and then she will learn to steel clear of feet :) |
Welcome to YT. You'll get use to the little things that arise with them. It won't be the last time he falls or jumps off something and lets out a yipe. I always run and massage the leg, and if they can walk on it I figure their ok. |
I've had dogs and cats all of my life but I don't remember having this fear before. We were joking we need to get him a plastic ball like you put hamsters in to protect him. |
Welcome Yorkies are fragile and something I learned very early with Sophie since she was small is to hold them with your hand spread under their chest at all times and the rest of their body on your arm. Teach your daughter how to hold the new puppy, and they will not be so likely to wiggle out. Definitely protect the pup from larger animals until they are older. You will find joy with a Yorkie and recommend a specialized book on how to raise a Yorkie from the pet store. Very helpful. Warmly, Deborah |
Welcome to YT! I was surprised with how fragile yorkie pups are as well, Bella will probably always be fragile because she is a smaller yorkie. I have labs and a boston terrier and for a while Bella was free to play with them whenever. We had an accident in the backyard while I was playing with the dogs where one of the labs landed on her purely on accident and I could have lost her so she does not play with them anymore. Only while I hold her. I just wanted to share because you can never be tooo careful, I learned the hard way. |
I'm sorry to hear about Bella's accident. It's too bad she can't play with the other dogs anymore. How do you keep the dogs apart when they are in the house? |
She still freely plays with our boston terrier, my oldest lab is terrified of her and the boston so she just heads anywhere but where the little dogs are. Bella does not have free roam of the house and is only running around when she is being supervised, she is still not potty trained all the way. Once she get's older I don't think I will be worried about it in the house but right now she is only 21 weeks and Willow is 1yr so they are still both very playful. I can say this for the big dogs they are less likely to step on her then a person is :) |
Welcome to YT!! Congrats on your new baby!:) |
Welcome to YT!! Congrats on the new baby! Yes you definitely have to watch them ALL THE TIME.! Good luck and have fun! Hope to see pictures! |
You have to learn the Yorkie Shuffle...... Put a bell on them.( on a collar) ... it is much easier to keep up with them ... and get puppy stairs while they are young.... I started my Samson with the stairs and he always goes up and down the stairs.... ( a lot less chance of him jumping off of something and hurting himself ) |
Thanks to all of you for the advise. I have one question about the steps. How old were your babies when you introduced the steps for the couch and bed? |
I think Samson was about 5 to 6 months old.... he is only 3.9 lbs .... so I have had to be careful.... ( today is his 1st birthday ) Put a treat on each step to coax them up and down ( I use honey nut cheerios) .... If you wait too long they will just jump and not even bother with the steps .... which is what my son's toy fox terrier did... and he broke a leg... |
