He's going to get HOW big?!! I took Max to the vets today for his second set of shots. He weighed in at 3lbs even at 11 weeks old. The vet said he thought he'd get to be about 15-18lbs!!! I was thinking Max would only get in the 10lb range! Does this seem like an accurate weight estimate to all of you? |
Doesnt sound that far off to me... I mean, considering he's already 3 lbs @ 11 wks... I think you'll have a very healthy Yorkie :D |
No way! A lot of vets aren't familiar with certain breeds of dogs, and I don't think they're ever very accurate with weight estimates. I'm sure he's used to estimating weights of bigger breeds. Lacy was a little over 3lbs at 12 weeks and is now 7.5lbs full grown. Every yorkie grows differently, but I really doubt he'll get over 10lbs unless he has big yorkies in his lines. My best guess is that he'll be 7-8lbs full grown |
NO not at all. At 12 weeks you double the weight and that gives you an adult weight estimate. I think he will be 6 1/2 -7 lbs |
That sounds a bit much to me, but nothing is impossible. I have to agree with above poster though, I would guess maybe 7-9 pounds. |
Thanks all! I wasn't looking for a super small Yorkie when I got him, I wanted one of standard sizing since I have two small children. But I also wasn't looking for a dog in the 20 pound range!;) |
http://pomderosaranch.com/ToyBreedWeightChart.htm this shows around 7-7 1/2 lbs. Mine at 12 weeks was 2lbs 6 oz..now, I do have one that ended up being 14 lbs, and she was 2 lbs 6 oz at 11 weeks.. |
Yorkies... you got to love them. It is amazing how different they can be, even litter mates. I have a 5 1/2 moth old who is a bit on the large side (make that a lot on the large side). He weighs about 6.5 pounds already, probably more. At 8 weeks he was 3.5 pounds and at 12 weeks he was 4.5 pounds. His mother was 6.5 pounds and father was 6 pounds and he is already bigger than them. There were only 2 in the litter and his sister was 3.0 pounds at 8 weeks. She has only gained a few ounces a week while my little Snickerdoodle gains a quarter of a pound a week. lol. I think that Snickerdoodle this that he is a Boxer just like his bother and he is doing everything he can to top out at 76 pounds. :) |
Well, my Jackson is almost 12 weeks and weighs 3 1/2 lbs. My vet says he estimates him to be about 6 - 7 lbs. full grown. I think your vet is guessing way too high! |
TJ was 1.8 lbs at 13 weeks - he is now 7 lbs  |
What in the world are you feeding TJ steak everynight???:D |

I don't think he and Roxy ate much at the breeders 'place' other than s*** - b/c that's where that habit came from and they BOTH were skin and bones when I got them, so I am sure that the 1.8 lbs was 'under' what his weight should have been. After he turned 1 year old, he rapidly started to grow and that's when he put on most of his adult weight. TJ eats 2x a day and he doesn't get much. He is on a special diet for liver compromised dogs and he mostly eats veggies and fruits. TJ is tall and long. I think he ideal weight is 6.5 lbs. We go to the Vet tomorrow to get nails cut and I will weigh him again, he may very well be at 6.5 lbs now, b/c he does feel just right now ;) |
 I'm not so sure about these vets! The first time I took Riley in for a visit she about 8 wks & weighed about 1 lb 4oz. The vet looked at her & said "She'll probably be about 10 lbs. She's full grown & weighs 3 lbs 8oz. I wouldn't put to much stock in the vet. Look at the parents & earlier litters to give you a better idea. |
I took Rocky in @ 5months and he was 4.9lbs..the vet told me he'd probably be about 10lbs..he's only gained 1lb since then! |
Koda was 3.5 @ 12 weeks ( A fluffy ball) and she is 5.5 now at a year, I think the Vet's stimate isn't that accurate;) |
