new yorkie mom Hi! I am a new yorkie mom. I have had my yorkie for 2 months now. He is 4 months old. He weighs 2.8 lbs. I was just wondering if anyone has had any problems with jealousy from their yorkie toward their kids. Mine only wants me to hold him and does not want my kids to come near me sometimes. Please give me some suggestions on what to do. Thanks S. |
Hi Cowboy 1 and welcome to YT! Congrats on your new little fur baby, what is his name? I have heard that a Yorkie might pick a favorite out of the family to latch onto. He might think he is protecting you and finding his position in the "pack". Maybe they kids could get involved with feeding/training/treats/etc for just a few minutes each day with you to build the bond and trust with your fur baby. I know that if my husband and I hug and horseplay Schatzie at times barks and acts up but we ignore her. She try's to demand our attention, imagine that. LOL Good luck! :p |
Oh My....I haven't had a problem with my yorkies doing this, but we did have a Chihuahua that did this very bad. He would growl and snap when either of my two kids would come near me. He bit my daughter so hard one day when she climbed up on the couch by me while he was in my lap, that it drew blood. We tried to discipline him, but it never seemed to work. I think becuase I let it go on for too long before I started. We ended up giving him to one of our best friends who was a single guy after he drew blood on my little girl. He really loves him and the get along great (he brings him over to play every now and then). The funny thing is that he does sometimes use his possessiveness to chase away unwanted girlfriends. LOL. I'm sure if you start early and are persistent, you can get your baby to stop doing it. My advice would be to scold him and put him in his crate right away when he does this to let him know it is unacceptable. By the way, Welcome to YT. Its nice to have you here. |
Welcome to YT. I'm sure you will find your answer here. We only have the single Furbaby in our home. No children to compete with. |
I will try that. Thanks. Do you have trouble getting things away from your yorkie? I have read so many books and have tried different things but he is very stubborn when he gets one of my cats toys. He will growl and try to bite you. I have been telling him no and putting him in his room. Any suggestions. By the way I have never been on any chats, so I am new to all of this. Maybe I will catch on soon. Thanks S |
Welcome to the forum. Schatzie had great advice: I have a 6 year old son and they play lovely together...I have given my son various "jobs" like pouring Chewy's afternoon water and food and giving him his toys. Also when Chewy listens to a command I sometimes let the boy give him his treats and it works great! |
