Spaying around 3 lbs? I am getting really nervous about getting Dakota spayed. I know that a lot of smaller dogs have had a lot of problems. Dakota is just around 3 lbs, should I wait a while. At the end of Novemember she will be 6 months. I just don't know what to dO!! Please help!! :( |
I hear ya!!! We waiting until Marcel was 11 mths old - and he still only weighed 2.12 pounds. The day after surgery, you not even have known that he had surgery. It went just perfectly. I totally understand your fear, but these little guys usually do so darn well. If it makes you feel better though, nothing wrong w/ waiting a bit. |
I don't mind waiting, but I don't want her to go into heat and have to worry about that whole thing.. I will be starting training at my job in a few week and it will be around 2 months like M-F 8-5 so I won't be there to change her diaper or anything?? |

I had the pre-blood work done before she was spayed and just like you I was as nervous as can be! I would wait till after her 1st heat cycle, Lillie did not have hers till she was 9 months old I think. |
There is nothing wrong with waiting a while for her to gain some more weight. Its a big operation and I totally understand your fears. Although, if its any consolation my vet has spayed hamsters with no complications. |
I just don't know if she will gain anymore weight. And she might not be all that small but to me she is by looking at a 14 lb'er everyday.lol |
Layla was 3 lbs at 6 1/2 months when she was spayed. She did really well. |
I know it's so scary. I would wait until 6 months at least just to make sure all of her baby teeth have fallen out. If not your vet can extract them when she's being spayed so she'll only need the anesthesia once. I'm sure she'll do fine but us mommies worry.;) |
I had a maltese spayed at right around 3 lbs and she did fine.. |
Lucy was spayed three weeks ago. She weighs just over 3 lbs. |
Ellie was just spayed at 5 1/2 pounds and I was so nervous, so I definately understand your concern. I would wait if I thought she was going to get bigger but by six months I'm not sure that will happen. It was harder with Ellie than I thought. I knew she would be tired but not that tired the first night. She got to come home 3 1/2 hours after surgery and the most she could do is sit. That she couldn't do well. She was walking the next day and was just about back to normal the day after that. Now we are having a peeing in the onesie issus and someone has to change it. I think you should do it when it fits in your schedule better if you don't think she'll get any bigger. |
Depends on how comfortable your vet is with doing the surgery. Izzy was 5 mos and only 2.3 at the time of her spay - he was afraid she would go in heat but he used this special laser surgery (cost a bit more but so worth it) and he is well known in our area (on the news and all) for doing state-of-the-art surgery on all types of animals including spaying on mice believe it or not so I felt very comfortable with him doing this on Izzy. Good thing I did - she has yet to gain weight and at 10 mos only 2.6 ounces. She was fine - stayed overnight at vet (they have 24/7 vet techs and heated crates and all), picked her up next afternoon and Sunday back to her old self. But no matter what they weigh they are your babies and you constantly worry about them regardless of what they go to the vet for. |
They are ok doing it, they wanted me to atleast wait until she was 6 months because they thought she would be 7lbs, but shes not. |

As far as the spay goes...I think that's a common concern, but I'm sure she'll be fine. Vets don't like to do it under 2 lbs...so you're definitely in the clear. Just make sure to have that blood work done like Dina did for Paisley... |
I understand your concern!!! If your vet is concern about her size or weight, then you should wait. My vet wanted to wait to see if Momiji will be at least 3lb. Well she still isn't 3lb yet and she is almost 14 months old. I went ahead did the spay at 10 months old when she was 2.3lb. She did great. She never came to heat so I was luck on that section. Dakota is sooooo cute so I will pray for you if you decide to go forward with the spay. But I'd say you don't have to hurry yet!!!! :D |
