Yorkies in the Pool I just got my first puppy! She is ten weeks old. In my backyard we have a large in ground pool and Princess will run around go close to the edge and she hasn't yet hopped in, but one day she accidentally backed into it. I was right next to her so I scooped her right up before she could even go under. How old should she be before I can see how well she swims and if she likes it. Will the chlorine effect her? I'm sooo paranoid that she is going to sink like a rock.....If anyone has any advice on this I would really appreciate it.... Thanks! :) |
pool Aww, my puppy loves the pool on a hot day.. I only keep him in for a few minutes and I do not take my eyes off him!!! |
How old is your puppy? |
pool ok well he is 4, not a puppy, but will always be my puppy. Anyway, I've had him in the pool since he was 1! |
Is chlorine bad for their skin? My girl is only 17 weeks old and I think she would like it but I'm afraid of the chlorine. |
pool I can't really answer that, I'm not too sure if it's bad for them.. I can only say my Diesel is fine after his 5 minute swims hehehe |
lifejackets? do any of you guys have lifejackets for your babies? i can see using them at the lake or something, but just for the pool  - do you put any kind of floatation device on them to keep them safe? |
i let Oreo and Ginger in my pool with very strict supervision.. i'm soo scared.. even though they know how to swim lol :p .. i don't know if chlorine is bad.. it can be very drying to their skin.. so after they take a dip in the pool.. i rinse them in the shower really well :) |
Mellie loves to swim (with very close supervision) Mac prefers to lounge on the raft with his paws hanging off. My groomer advised me to rinse them off so they do not get chlorine build-up on their hair. |
4 Attachment(s) If you have a pool I think it is imperative to start them swimming at a young age and getting used to knowing how to get out of the pool if they fall in accidently when no one is there to fish them out. They need to be trained to get to the steps or the beach entry or whatever area your pool has that allows them to get out. I have a pool and I am petrified because we have 6 exterior doors that lead to it! I have purchased a "skamper ramp" to allow them to get out in more than one area of the pool. My yorkies are small and I am afraid they might tire easily and not be able to swim far enough to get to the steps. I am also having my pool modified to allow a "beach entry" which is a sloped area that allows them to touch and walk up a concrete ramp to get in or out. Below are photos of the skamper ramp that you can get at skamperramp.com as well as photos of my Hefner in his life jacket which I think is an absolute necessity on a boat. |
Aww! I wish I had a pool so that Riley and TJ could swim! I do not know if the chlorine would harm the dog, but just in case, I would give your Yorkie a bath right after they swim, and I would make sure your Yorkie wears a life jacket in the pool! I wish I had a pool! |
Those pictures are sooo cute. I have a pool at my parents' house when I visit. I'm just afraid because Coco is soooo small. She is only 2 lbs at 17 weeks. Is that too young? |
What about Yorkies going to the beach? I know they cannot get out in the water but should be able to walk in the surf. I suppose just rinsing them off daily like after being in a pool would be sufficient for them. |
Schatzie has only been in the pool twice. Once by accident falling in, and the other while I was holding her. Neither time was she too thrilled. I treat her or would treat any other dog like a small child and never let them out of my sight around any pool. But Im a worry wart too :p |
SocalCalyorkiluvr- I loved the pics!!!! Thanks so much!! Everyone thanks for your advice. Today I went to PetSmart and bought Princess a baby pool. She wasn't thrilled and tried to hop out once, but after two tries she stayed in and I think she enjoyed it. I'm still too nervous to put her in our pool, but soon I'm going to try it. Do you think 11 weeks is too young to try the big pool??? I'm paranoid! lol thanks everyone! :) |
