Newbie with question Hi Everyone, I am new to this forum but I know I will enjoy being a part of it. I have a 6 year old yorkie who is the bestest (Jake). My question is for my Daughter, her fiance' got her a 13 week old male yorkie for an early Christmas Present. His name is Tucker. She has had him for 2 days and she adores him but she is worried sick about him because he is so scared. She said he trembles everytime you pick him up, and just stays in one spot (where ever you put him). He doesn't play at all. She said he would eat if you fed him piece by piece. He is pooping and Peeing everytime she takes him out. She is just worried that he has had no one on one human contact and that he might be scarred for life and not come out of it. He came from a breeder that had quite a few dogs on site so we are thinking she did not give any attention to him. Has anyone had this problem? Do you think he will come around and bond with her. She is trying so hard. But she said he is so scared of her. Thank you in advance! AleisaRoi |
Patience, a little time, and plenty of loving will take care of that. :) Even the most socialized pup is a little overwhelmed when arriving at their new home. Tell her to keep doing what's she's doing... |
Congrats to your daughter on the new Yorkie! Considering her baby is only 13 wks, I think he needs a little time to get familiar with the new environment. Take into consideration that he's missing his litter mates, especially if you think that he wasnt getting enough human contact. I agree w/ bchgirl - be patient and give him lots and lots of love and attention. And lots of toys for a pup isnt a bad idea either.... Hope all goes well and hope to see pics :D |
personally ,i would baby take to him.. he might just come around... babies like that alot... i still do it with lexi, as she will always be my baby. good luck and welcome... |
:wavey: :wavey: :wavey: :wavey: Welcome to YT!!!! Thanks guys! I'm Jessica, the daughter to AlesiaRoi and Momma to Tucker. I've just been worried sick about him because he is so scared and shy. So far our progress includes walking on the carpet and eating from the food bowl. He still won't walk on the kitchen floor and is scared if he's taken to any room other than the living room. He seems happy outside in the grass, but is VERY afraid of the sidewalk and the front porch. He's very scared of being picked up - I'm not sure if he has had a bad experience with this or what, but he really tenses up when you scoop down to pick him up. He seems to have taken up with his crate that I got to leave him in while I'm at work and at night. He will get in there all by himself to lie down in his bed even when he doesn't have to be. Since he is still so scared of everything, should I let him get used to his new home before I take him out to "socialize" him? If so, how long should I wait? |
Poor baby. Tucker is going to need lots and lots of love right now. One thing that might help him is for you to get on your knees and then pick him up. When you are standing up and bend at the waist it makes you look big and scary to him. I don't think I would rush him to meet other people until he feels confident in your love. A visit from your mom's dog might help. It might give him a boost to have some play time. I may be way off track but I have a feeling Tucker was abused or ignored. Don't know if these suggestions will work but I hope things get better for all of you soon. Pepper:) |

He's still young, puppies need lots of attention, he will come around. He's tiny and he's in a new big place, kind of scary for a little guy. When you leave him leave on some soft music or the TV, it calms them. Kitchen floors are sometimes scary, but before you know it he's going to be all over your home exploring ;) He sure is cute!!!!:) |
Poor thing. Just be super patient and give him lots of love and time to feel comfortable with his new home. |
Welcome to both of you and Tucker. I am relatively new here but there are some people on here with outstanding advice. I have had my baby Rocco for about 5 weeks now but for the first week or maybe even a little longer he acted just like your Tucker. I just help him and talked and loved on him as much as I could and it was like he just woke up one morning and was like "hey, i am a part of this family and they love me". I know that sounds corny but thats what it seemed like. Good luck and just give him tons of love. |
Tucker Update Today Tucker is doing about the same. I was frying some hamburger meat in the kitchen for dinner and he actually poked his head in there for a second to see what I was doing (I guess because of the smell), but he quickly ran back out. It may seem small, but this is huge considering he wouldn't go near the kitchen floor before. I dunno what it is about new rooms, but he is so scared of anywhere other than the living room and the small grassy area where he goes potty. Will he always be this scared of unfamiliar places? I just worry when I take him to new places he'll immediately freeze up and start trembling all over (like he does now if he's taken to any other room in the house). Has anyone had a similar experience? Most puppies are so exporative and bouncing off the walls. Tucker is very shy and scared. It's only been a a little less than a week, but I'm just very concerned. I'm also worried because he doesn't seem to be bonding with me. Even though I lay in the floor and try to play with him for hours, he still will run away if he sees me walking toward him. Lastly, he runs and gets in his crate anytime he's afraid. Should I let him get out on his own or should I get him out? I don't want him to be scared his whole life :( |
LoL I wish mybabies would go to the crate at times. Can never get them to stay in there. hmm he does sound like he had a bad experience which is why he's afraid of the human touch, however it sounds like he's coming around. He'll get used to you in no time. Soon he'll be following you around like a shadow. |
Welcome. I remember when I got Deiter he was like that. But after a week there was no more being like that. Just keep doing what are and he will come around soon. Try getting down to his level maybe on your knees. That worked for Deiter. Good luck |
When I got Turbo, he hated the sidewalk as well. Now, I have Callie and she is a lot like Tucker. Just be patient, and maybe give him an old t-shirt with your smell on it to snuggle with. Callie is starting to come around, and she has been with me for about 2-3 weeks now. |
your new baby This is a favorite of mine, try which ever way you can to rub his belly, the part that feels like a baby's bottom..lol I use my finger nails in cases like this, of course not harshly, if you do it a little at a time, they usually love it, the more they like it, the more relaxed they become..again it takes time...while doing this talk very lovingly to him...let him know you are just talking to him...you are so happy he is with you...and remember he is new. I have one that was 7 months old, I swear he had no human contact, now two years later, he is still very stiff when picked up, he gets plenty of love, he was just older when we got him. He needs to be in control, if we are laying on the bed or couch, he gives kissses, if we pick him up, it is harder to get one kiss... Your baby is young...patience, love, understanding, and soon, he will be your shadow..:-) I have one that whines every night for her time with me when she is ready, i pick her up like a baby, she lays on her back and will just lay and almost sleep when I do this to her....but it is everynight she wants it.. in fact I guess it is her time now..she is whining for me to stop this typing,.. pooh's mum |
good luck to you and welcome to YT!!! these pups all have different personalities... but im sure Tucker will come around super soon... just keep loving him and trying like you have... how is he with toys?... that might be another way to bond... Belle loves to play tug, even from when we first got her... so maybe try giving him some toys and playing with him?? and don't worry, before you know it your Tucker will be following you around everywhere, just remember it takes time and patience |
