Yorkie's and Snow? This will be my 1st winter with my baby and I'm worried about his little paws on the snow/ice... is it smart to get shoes for him or can yorkie's handle snow in small amounts? |
Ha, my favorite topic. I'm obsessed with booties for my Yorkies. First of all, yes, they can handle short trips outside without booties on. I let mine out all the time in the backyard to do their business. For longer walks, I would recommend booties for walking on snow. I find that, even though it can take a while to get them to tolerate them, they stay out longer on walks and don't shiver when I make them wear them. Just be careful what kind you get. Some of the fitted "shoes" out there are not conducive to walking. All a dog needs is a fleece or water resistant sack with Velcro around the top. Fleece is easy to make, but the disadvantage is they soak up water if the snow is slushy. I'm not sure this site makes booties small enough for Yorkies anymore, but this is the type of bootie I'm talking about: http://www.dogbooties.com/ |
Mike has great advice. I used to live in Minnesota, and the chi we had wore little boots called "Paw Tecteurs" from Petsmart. Basically they're little sleeves with rubber on the outside and fleece on the inside, and a velcro strap. You can get them at Petsmart (hey, you can always return them if your dog hates them!) |
Mine have boots but barely wear them. Short amounts of time in the snow without boots is fine |
thanks for the info guys! I will look into getting those types of booties. :D :D :D |
My two love the snow, they run and jump like Bunnys, they love it when i kick uo the snow with my feet, i just make shure they dont stay out too long. Then when i get back in the house i have to get all the little snowballs of their little legs  :D |
