Dog left in car..... I was leaving Target today when I passed a car with an english sheep dog locked in a small car no where near any shade. It was 89 degrees on my car thermostat and they had only left 3 of the windows down about 2 inches. I went back into the store and told the security guard, who walked out to the car with me. The poor dog was trying to squeeze his nose up to the cracks and kept moving from the front to back seats. The parking lot security guy told me this was all OK because the windows were cracked, so he would not call the police, but he did stay by the car til the owners came back. Well I did call the police and was on hold with animal control when the owners came back. They insisted that the dog was OK because the windows were cracked and they'd only been gone "10 minutes". Well I made a scene and told them that I'd been there for 25 minutes and they did not deserve their dog and kept saying "shame on you!" This was my first parking lot confrontation so what do you guys think......was I wrong??? I just felt so sorry for that dog. |
I thought it was against the law to leave a pet unatended in a car in CA. anyway. You were right to be concerned, but in this day and age, be careful who you yell at. ;) |
You did ok..What was the temp..?? I never take my pets if I know I am going into a store like target..you never just run in and out!! |
You did the right thing. I don't think they will leave the pup alone again. Being put in the wrong will hopefully make them think twice. I would have done the same thing. |
You did the right thing. I just hope that if I ever get in that situation, I will have the guts to do what you did. Some people need a good lecturing! |
Poor doggie. I know how you feel, sometimes I feel all animal police too. |
Poor pup!!! Good going! |
I also believe you did the right thing. Some people just don't get it until something happens. I had stopped off to do groceries the other day in an area that isn't very good. As I was walking into the store I could hear this dog growling and barking furiously...I turned and there was the grocery cart kid (little b*st*rd) with his hands made claw like jumping and making growling noises at this little jack russell...AND THE OWNER WAS IN THE CAR HOLDING THE DOG!! The dog was trying to leap out of the window at the kid. I was SO MAD! I contemplated going over to him and ask him how he would react to someone doing this to him. But, like I said I was in a bad area, there have been shootings and stabbings where I was and didn't want to take a chance of getting hurt. I wanted to smack that little sh*t! |

Wow, I know I still see people doing this in CA but with their human kids!!! It agrivates me to no end! I think you were right to be concerned, but, I agree...you have to be carefull who you get into it with this day in age...especially CA. You just never know who is gonna "go postal" on you. Stay safe! |
You did the right thing. I know here in Texas it's ilegal to leave dogs in a car, even if the windows are a bit opened. On sunday afternoon I went out with my husband and mom and when we got to the place someone had left a dog in the car. If you live in Texas you can imagine how hot it gets here in the summer. But someone had called the cops and they were opening the car to get the dog out. And the people were going to be fined for breaking the law. |

What a great thing you did. I know I have been told by others that they have seen dogs in cars and have not done anything because they didn't have time. How much time does it take a save a life of a dog??? GOOD FOR YOU !!!!!!!!!! |
most people treat dogs like dogs, to them its just an animal. We here think a bit differently, not all but most of us. I never leave rocky in the car unless its in my sight, so only when putting in gas, dropping off mail. Plus I got very dark windows so no one can see him. But I would. NEver leave him in the car period. |
were you wrong ? No ... brave though ... now days people just as well shot you in a parking lot over something like this... I agree the dog should never have been left in the car... the world needs more people like you to protect our animals and ok course our little children as well. |
No you did the right thing. People like that don't deserve dogs. I have never left mine in a car. I wouldn't want to be left in there with just a crack window. If it is not good for me then it sure isn't good for my boys either. That is what I say. I wanted to be treated great and so do my boys. Treat them how you want to be treated. Plus a whole lot more. |
It is neglect and you did the right thing and maybe prevented something horrible from happening to that poor dog in the future. Found this link on a dog not so lucky even though the "windows are cracked'. http://www.associatedcontent.com/art...ft_in_hot.html Thank you for standing up and saying something!!:animal36 |
Thank you all for your support. Looking back a day later, I would have done the same thing....better safe than sorry. |

you did good I think you were right, glad you did it! I did the same thing about a 3 yr. old boy (human) in a car at our local pool...I found the Mom and watched to see if she was going to go to the car- she said, "you're going to stay here and watch me aren't you?" I smiled and shrugged my shoulders. I'm sure I'm not her favorite person. If I saw a pup in a car in the same circumstance, I would do it too.:good job: |
It is against the law in the state of FL to leave a dog in the car unattended regardless of the temperature! I have been known to leave a few notes on windshield educating people! I was actually thinking about making little business cards to put on the windshields. I see at least one a week! So sad! |
I think it's terrible for anyone to leave animals in vehicles. I've often been tempted to do the same thing. |
Good for you for standing up for that dog! :thumbs_up :number1ri :dogwalk: :dogwalk: :dogwalk: |
Yeah for you! I know it can be frustrating if you have to go inside somewhere and you have your pet with you, BUT you take that chance when you decide to leave with them. Last Saturday Koda and I went out. We went to a pet store for his food, rural king and TSC cause they were having Pet'o'ween things there and I could take him in. I really needed to stop at Wal-Mart but of course i didn't. The thought didn't even cross my mind of leaving him in the truck! |
