Hi all,
I have just gotten my first yorkie 3 weeks ago. I had a wonderful shiz-tzu named buddy who passed away last year. I did not wish to replace him with the same breed. My new baby name is Romeo. I love him already.He is a handful. I just can;t seem to get him to stop bitting everyone. He is 3 months old. My hubby is getting a little annoyed with this. Because his little sharp teeth hurt and leave puntures. We keep plenty of chew toys around. but he preferrs skin, lol. I put him in a porta crib, which he dosen't seem to mind. But I need any suggestions on how to stop this behavior. Can any one help me.

Congrats on the new baby.

As for the biting, I'd get some very small baby sized chew toys (you might try flavored chew toy bones made for dogs - just make sure its safe for a puppy) and play an easy game of tug with him using the toy. This should allow him to sink his teeth into something other than you or your husband.

Whenever he bites you or the husband, tell him no and put him in his pen with his chew toys. Hopefully he learns to realize he should be chewing on the toys rather than you.

Welcome to YT! Plentiful amount of knowledge around here! As far as biting, my Kobi did that too and it drove me NUTS. I felt like I tried everything, but then one day I just said, oh, he finally quit chewing. I think it's just a baby thing and while it may be annoying, it most likely will go away eventually...just my 2 cents :)

Hi Kathy, First Welcome to YT..You will LOVE it here!!I'm fairly new here too and have a 4 mos. old male Yorkie named "Gus". He likes to mouth us too and I always grab a toy to distract him so he'll get his mind off that kind of behaviour. Also, try to turn your back on him (ignore him) or walk away (they hate being ignored)
The long time YT members are very knowledgeable and very giving of their time so don't hesitate to ask any questions you have!! Good luck

I would get him a little kong, and fill it with peanut butter, do not let him bite your hands...when my 12 week old starts biting, I refuse to play with her, and ball my hand up, or scream ouch, just like a dog they're biting would screech..then distract him with something it's okay to bite on..

Welcome to YT! :D Congrats on your new baby.

Everyone has given you wonderful advice....distract, redirect, ignore, etc.. I think all of that is very important. The most important thing though is consistency! Whatever you do, get everyone in the house on the same plan and no backsliding. That will just confuse your pup.

The only other suggestion I have is a cold, frozen chew toy. Sometimes it helps with the teething soreness. Gizmo loves ice cubes also. It's like a hockey game/chew toy all in one! He bats it all over the tiled kitchen. :rolleyes:

Hi and welcome to YT! If I'm doing the math correctly, then you got your baby when he was 9 wks old? Generally, Yorkies are not placed with the new families until they are 12 wks old. Not biting is a social action that is learned while with the mother and litter mates during those later weeks, but your little guy didn't get that. So that is a reason why he may be biting....

....Now to stop him from biting, you've been given some good advice already...the best of which was be consistant with what you choose to do. Make sure that he has plenty of toys to chew on that he likes. A firm 'no' followed by a time out away from the rest of the family is what I would suggest.

I never had this problem with Bella but it does sound like you have gotten some great advice. Good luck with the biting!

I really have to disagree with the biting if they leave their moms before 12 weeks..I had my first yorkie at 6 weeks, she was NOT a biter, the one I have now, she was going on 12 weeks when I got her, and she bites my hand..I tell her NO, I squeal like she's hurting me, then ball my hand up and refuse to play with her..then the toys get thrown for her to distract her..they are babies, they're teething and they're going to chew on anything and everything(or most of them will)

I said is *may* be a reason, not it is the reason. As it is widely believed to be one of MANY negative aspects of early separation from the mom and litter.

In any case, I was just trying to offer some general info in addition to a suggestion. I was NOT trying to turn her thread for help into one of *those* arguments about age, so lets try to keep it positive and focused on giving her the help she needs.:)

Biting puppy- when he/she bites place your finger sideway toward the back of his jaw and say "no bite" ...if he does it again repeat putting a bit of force at the back of the jaw and again "no bite"...if he does it during play do the above and walk away stopping all play and ignore him...he will soon learn this is unacceptable behavior!! it will work quickly if you are consistant...

Welcome to YT. What worked for me was screaming Ouch in a loud voice. It would scare them, and they'd stop right away. It only took doing that a few times and they stopped.

Thank you all for warm welcome. I am trying all of your suggestions. I make him rope toys and he loves them. Im trying to get everyone to use them when he starts biting. The thing is you can't even pet him without him biting. Hubby will be napping on couch and he will jump up and bite his nose. LOL.(hubby doesn't think it is to funny). I know hubby loves him very much but he also gets very mad at him when he does this. And the little terror doesn't seem to care. It's like there is no stopping him. How long should he be left in pen?
