My hands are not a toy Yumi is about 5 months now and no matter if I play with her ball, booda toy or chewy bone with her, she looks to my hands as also being a toy and she playfully trys to bite on them. Does anyone know how I can get her to stop? She does this to visitors too...which is not good. |
Maybe spray a little bitter apple on your hands. |
Your hands ARE a toy, get used to it!!! LOL JUST KIDDING :) :) If she goes for your hand, say "ouch" in a higher pitch voice like it hurts you, then stop playing with her for a time, do this every time she gets her mouth on your hand and pretty soon you will see that she gets the idea-- bite a hand, no playtime. It works, trust me. But you must be patient, as this is normal puppy behavior. Keep praising her for what she does right. |
When she does that, say "no" firmly, put your hands behind your back and do a quick time out. Let her know that you will not play with her as long as she is doing that behavior. |
I have raised Chattie and Chizzie from young puppy hood, and Scarlett O'Harley from birth. All three girls considered fingers and toes the best and most interesting toys in the entire world. To me it was a supreme compliment that they loved my hands and toes..... and early on they learned to control the pressure they used. When they chomped down too hard, I would tell them NO in a firm voice and quit playing for a few minutes. They learn very fast. Now, the girls are all grown up and don't play with hands and feet much any more. Chizzie lives for her ball game, Scarlett is presently occupied being big sister and baby sitter for Chizzie's 4 pups, and Chattie is way too busy being a Prima Dona to bother with finger chewing. You know, I miss those puppy days..... Enjoy the puppy time - it is over all too soon. When Yumi mouths you, tell her NO in a firm voice and completely ignore her for two or three minutes - in time she will learn that it is not acceptable. |
Thanks for all the advice. Looks like I am on the right track. I have tried bitter apple, but I wash my hands too much for that to last. But I do say "no" most times, but I never tried time out..because it is so much fun playing with her. I will take all of your advice. Thanks again...!!!:animal36 |
