Stupid Q. I'm just curious what the rest of you think or know... When dogs look in the mirror, do they know they're looking at themselves???  Sometimes I hold Otis up to the mirror and I wonder if he knows that's him. I know it's a silly question, but I honestly spend a good amount of time wondering what goes on in his tiny pea brain! |
I noticed the day I brought Ranger home, he walked in front of a mirror took one look and kept walking. But the same day he was very aware of his shadow, as he would bark and growl at it. But now when he looks in the mirror I swear he's checking himself out sometimes its so funny and he still barks at his shadow if he sees it on a wall. I learned from the discovery channel that human babies don't recognize themselves in a mirror until a certain point in developement. So maybe it could be the same for puppies?? But for older dogs I wouldn't know, it might depend on when they are introduced to their reflection. . .Very Interesting though I might add!! |
I don't think that's a stupid question at all, actually, Junebug. When Yoda was little, he would bark up a storm looking at himself! But we do put him next to the mirror now, and he seems fine about it. So I think they learn? Oh c'mon now, Otis is one smart cookie! Give him a lil' more credit than that! :P What does Otis do when he looks at himself in the mirror. Another question to ask perhaps is do they know it's US in the mirror when the look at us? Yoda has certainly never attacked the mirror at least... |
Ranger just gave me a fond memory of my late dog........lol..........she used to check herself out in the mirror as well, she would even cock her head a little bit to get a better look at herself... she would also walk away a little bit and look back at the mirror for a different perspective, i could swear she was thinking "does this make my butt look big".....i guess it was my fault to begin with, i always said she was sooooooooooooooooo pretty  orin |
When Obie was 9 weeks old, we were guests in a room with a mirror wall. He went ballistic with exitement, carried on chasing that little puppy in the mirror back and forth until I finally covered the mirror so we could get some sleep. He continued to play with his reflection in the mirror for some weeks, but then apparently seemed to outgrow it and ignore mirrors most of the time. But even now (at a year and a half) he will occasionally decide to get excited and bark at his image in a mirror. I don't what goes on in his mind about it. |
My moms dog sfter she brought him home he sat in front of the mirror for like 30 min to an hour barking. It was cute |
How about TV? Bo (I swear!) watched an episode of the Dog Whisperer the other day that had a dog on it that barked too much. He seemed really fascinated with it for several minutes... |
I've also wondered the same thing about the mirror. At first, Bentley would bark at himself and run around like he wanted to play. I think he thought there was another dog there. Now he just stares at himself as though he is trying to figure it out. It's really funny when I hold him and he is looking in the mirror. He sees me in the mirror and then turns and looks at the real me, then looks back at me in the mirror, and gets a really confused look on his face. I wonder what he is thinking. |

Since then, though, he has not noticed dogs barking in movies--I guess he knows they're not real dogs, now. |
Yeah, I think they catch on pretty quick. Bo will still occasionally perk up his ears when he hears a siren or whistle on TV, but he's not noticing it as much now. :) |
when we watch animal cops or a dog show, my girl will watch the whole show with us as long as there is an animal on the screen. When there are close ups of the animals, she will jump up on the tv and chase the animal with her nose. She never gets tired of it. She also likes to look at herself in the reflection of our brass kickplate on the bottom of our door. |
Memngirl, what a smart and sociable girl you have!! How sweet! :) |
kayser looks him self at the miror for like 3 seconds and then he keeps looking everywhere exept the miror |
Gracie growls at her reflection, and cautiously looks at anything else that remotely casts a reflection such as the dishwasher, china cabinet, etc. I think she thinks its another dog. Oh , these dorky yorkies :D |
