Won't Play I just adopted a sweet 8 year old rescue Yorkie, "KC", that was a puppymill breeding dog for the large majority of her life. She's doing really well, and seems very happy. BUT she wont play! I dont think its because she doesnt want to, I just dont think she knows how! I'll squeek toys for her, and she'll perk up -- sometimes she'll nudge it once or twice with her nose, but stops there. I've tried the kong toy, but she's not big on treats (and they need to be small pieces so they fall out as soon as I put them in anyways!) and she doesnt care for peanut butter, so she could care less about the kong. She tends to sleep a lot (no medical problem, as she's just been to the vet. I think sleeping is all she knows to do during the day and night), and I've taken her on lots of engaging walks outside. She will have random spurts of craziness where she rubs her body and head all over her bed or crate and pops her little head up looking at me with a crazy hair do (its hilarious), then she'll lay down again. Any suggestions on how to get my little girl to enjoy life with a bit of play time?? |
She may not have known how to play during her life before you. I'd say just to rub her a lot, pet her, say happy things, and just let her ease into it. If she likes to lay a lot, just snuggle up to her, and play with her with your hands. Then perhaps later you can add a towel or sock or something soft (and not threatening) and see if she wants to play with that, and then go from there. I'm sure KC is getting a lot of love from you, she just may not be used to all the attention and love yet. :) |
It took nearly 3 years for my friends rescue dog (and she was only 4) to even begin to initiate play they simply don't learn to play and treats etc again have probably never been given before, all you can do is allow this little one to sleep and love her when she is awake. When we take on rescues we take on all the baggage that goes with them I'm afraid. |
BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO!!!!!!! Thank you so much for saving this poor dogs life and giving her a better one. Like everyone says, take your time with her...give her lots and lots and lots of love. I'm sure with time and love and constant petting and affection she will come around. |
You are soo amazing! It takes a very great person to rescue a puppy. My hat is off to you! All she needs is lot's of warm loving hugs. She will ease into her new surroundings. I would start with a small soft ball and just roll it on the floor. She will probably just stare at you but, she'll eventually catch on. Good Luck!! |
Congratulations to you for rescuing her . You are a very good person . |
Thank you for all your kind words and advice...its really amazing to watch her grow in confidence each day. Her Yorkie-ness is coming out slowly but surely. She's actually starting to romp back and forth on the couch (in a silly way, not itchy way), and only stops when I take a peak at what she's doing -- hair all poofed out like a little lion! She's also becoming a tad more curious, not as timid. Checking in on everything and everyone. Its great. And, yes, she's getting TONS and TONS of love and attention, so its only a matter of time! I will keep everyone updated :) as I know all of us at YorkieTalk LOVE updates!!! :) |
I am very glad to hear that she is doing well in her adapting process . She will be better and better with your love and attention . Congratulations for your rescued little one , you are a kind person . She will thank you very much by showing you how she loves you . |

That's sad that she only slept all of the time in her previous life. Poor thing. But now she is sooo lucky, now that she has you! She will gradually come around, I'm sure of it! Good for you to take her on. I would too, in a heartbeat! |
dianne welcom to yorkietalk what a wonderful person you are to give this precious dog a home.I would love to hear more of her story and how did you come about getting her?I would love to know if her teeth were checked when she had her checkup as some dogs sleep alot when they have bad teeth.anyway enjoy her and take care hope you can tell us more of her story :) dianne :) |
Hi Dianne! Thanks for the welcome. I came across KC online with Petfinder.com. She was rescued by the FluffyButts Rescue Group in Iowa. They swooped her up out of that mean old puppymill, got her all cleaned up (including teeth extractions -- mainly her top teeth, removing a mammory tumor :( , and had her spayed...not to mention showing her some love!), and she was fostered by a wonderful family. I flew out to Chicago (she made the trip up from Iowa with her foster mom) and picked her up. She's also just been to a great vet here in the city, so she's just swell!! :) Every hour she seems to gain more confidence. Pretty soon Im sure she'll think she owns the entire city! |
