WARNING concerning Greenies My mom just sent me this from the YTH yahoo group: This past weekend K lost her beloved Belfast's Angel Kisses to a blockage and rupture from those "mini Greenies" that we have all been inundated with emails about the past month. According to K, it was one of the most horrible events in her life and she begs everyone to not give their precious little Yorkies any of this product whatsoever. She is not the only one saying this in these past few months, so I beg us all to revisit this topic and be careful once again. It turned out to be a $2400.00 episode and the outcome was another death of one of our little treasures. Please everyone, let's try and get to the bottom of this product and see what we can do to let the company know what is happening to our little ones. |
I noticed that one of my Yorkies, Buddy has been vomiting after he eats a greenie. Although he has not vomited any blood I stopped giving Buddy and Jake greenies a couple of days ago, I do not want to take a chance with them. |
I've never given these to my Brady but you guys should definitely contact the company...here is the link with their contact information: http://www.greenies.com/html/contact/contact.html |
Thank you...I just emailed them. |
Thank you so much for the warning. I could not bear for anything to happen to my Pixie. She loves those Greenies but I have noticed that she has bright green runny #2's all over her crate the next day. |
I'm sorry to hear about the loss. I tried googling this topic and found nothing out there, nada. Before I send an email to the company re this it would be great to have an informed opinion and not one based on one post in an internet forum. Also if anyone hears back from greenies.com could you please post their response. |
I haven't heard anything either about Greenies being a problem, at least not the regular-sized kind. In fact, many of the breeders I talk to say to give Yorkies Greenies. But it is good to know that the mini bits can cause problems. |

I recently purchased the "Teenie" sized Greenies and they are much smaller than the petites. It says the teenies are for toy breed dogs and dogs 5-15 lbs. Carter only eats them when I am there to start him off -- otherwise, he thinks they are only for hiding. |

my dogs love greenies but they only get them as a treat and we watch them eat them. mostly licking and chewing. a blockage is awful but how much was this poor dog eating, i mean they are a treat not food. i think i will ask the vet when i see him sat what he thinks on this. |
I only bought the greenies shaped like a little toothbrush once and my yorkies loved them but I heard the stories and hadn't bought more until today when I bought a bag of the little tiny bits for training. Is it the tiny bits that caused this dog's death or a larger greenie? |
Oh dear..I normally give half of a pettite size greenie to my Cherie and she loves it. But I do not give often, maybe once every 2 weeks. |

"I don't know if this was necessary -- the vet thought so. I don't know if the risks, if any, of using Greeines to treat your dog outweigh any benefits, if any. Perhaps the prudent thing to do if you have a dog that tends to gulp his/her food (or to eat quickly) and you want to give Greenies, is to use the little Greenie bits that they sell, instead of the big bone/toothbrush shape.
