Teething toys I just got a Yorkie puppy on Thursday, she's 12 weeks old and 2lbs 10oz. She's teething and I don't know what to give her. I haven't had a puppy in 15 years and my other dogs weren't really into toys. I bought her this nylabone 3 pack Small Dog Value Pack | Product Finder | My Pet Is | Small Dog | Nylabone -She was ok with the first edible bone, so I bought her a pack of them and a big piece of the end nub broke off; so now I'm afraid to give them to her. -I won't re-buy the blue one because sometimes she tries to bite the nubs off it, for now I watch her very closely with it and keep checking it for missing nubs. -So far she's ok with the clear one. She also has a JW baseball, she plays with it a little but isn't big on it. They're also kinda wasteful because I only let her eat half of it (gets too small). Hi - WELCOME TO YT :)! Sounds like you're already giving her great options, what a good Momma you are...she's already got you wrapped around her paw :D. You could also try CET chews - I get mine on Amazon rather than at the vet bc they're much cheaper. I also realllly am loving Honest Kitchen Beams -- I get the larger size and then cut them down to yorkie size...they're fish, so you have to be able to tolerate a fishy smell. |
We make great "toys" out of fleece strips, braiding weaving or twisting them- or just plain knotting the strips all together. They are lightweight, easy to keep clean, shines up their teeth,and you can dampen them and freeze for a mess free chew time. You might have an old blanket, jacket or pants around that you can recycle ! My vet loved them and thought it was a great idea! |
Oops! just read your last sentence, our pups never really chewed our things but they had plenty of their own to offer them. |
Yeah my entire family is totally wrapped around her paw, even the people who don't live with her. I'll look into the CET chews and Honest Kitchen Beams, it looks like my local pet store sells them. I like the idea of making my own toys, but I think I need to break her bad habits first. When my other dogs (2 poodles) were puppies we gave them rope bones and that translated into chewing everything with a similar fringe (ex. tea towels); that stopped after we took away the rope bones. They were really good about not chewing things. This pup is just a chewer. I tell her no and try to redirect or distract her, but it doesn't always work. Thanks for the suggestions. |
I have the nylabone keys for my guys and as adult they still will lay and chew on them. I've bought about 3 sets now and will buy a new set for the new baby when she comes... the babies liked them I think because they were brightly coloured too. |
The nylabone keys look like they're made of the same material as the clear bone from the 3-pack. She might like the shape/color of the keys better. Thanks for the suggestion. |
I bought Lola the Himalayan chews, she loves them so far and she's barely made a dent in them. I also gave in and bought her a stuffed animal after watching her play with a sock. My yorkie is now 8 mos. and I've made several toys for her to tug, throw and chew. Cotton clothes line braided and knotted makes a great pull toy and an old tube sock tied in knots is great for chewing and easy to clean. She likes the challenge of removing the stuffing out of her toy animals, so I resew them without the stuffing and she still loves them. She's just as happy with handmade toys (just like little children!). |
My 15 week yorkie chews on the end of a toothbrush. I can't leave him alone with it, and have to hold the handle or he'll start chewing on the rubber grippy bits, but it's good practice for him, he sometimes even lets me brush a bit. Also I use a nylafish and a crocheted bunny but I have to check on those quite often for wear and tear too. If I don't have lots of chewy toys around he'll start chewing on my homework or my husband's shoes. T_T |
