Very Picky Eater? Hi, I'm new to this site and first time I've ever tried to get information about my Yorkie from outside the Vet office. Is your Yorkie a finicky eater? I can't seem to find a food that he will stay with consistanly. I've been making him home meals for a year now and he loves it one day and sticks his nose up the next. He is so stubborn, he will go without food for a day or so. He won't eat dry food anymore unless it's the cats. He has alergies so the Vet suggested home cooked foods and gave me some good recipes so the food is always fresh. Any suggestions? Thanks so much! Big Ben's mom. . |
Hi and welcome to YT! My Rosie is very picky. I am curious what are you using in your home cooked meals? I also home cook. Rosie didn't like the rice but loves sweet potatoes and squash! Maybe try something new? Also, cat food s not good for our pups so I wouldn't let him eat it. Even though they act like cat food is a steak dinner! Lol |
Hello and welcome to YT. Maybe start with dry food and add a topper of wet food and mix it in it. There are some great smelling food for dogs. There is a list on here with some great healthy canned dog foods. Please do not feed you dog any cat food. It is very harmful to them |
Thank's for your responses. No worries about the cat food, I no longer have a cat and would never let my Yorkie eat it, but he sure did try. I make his food w/ ground turkey or chicken, brown rice, oatmeal, peas & carrots, garlic, bone meal, kelp, Vitamin C. and a little oil. I've tried other recipies similar to this. He won't eat dry food even when I mix it with soft. |

Hi, my Max use to be a very picky eater...and then we found out he has allergies. I wasn't able to find anything he would eat once the novelty wore off. Then we found out he has allergies. He is now on cans of Royal Canin vegetarian and Royal Canin hypoallergenic ... For about 5 months. I've also introduced both in dry form. Fingers crossed! |

Have you tried Freshpet dog food its in the refrigerated section my dog loves it and its made with fresh meats and veggies..... |
my vet said "when they get hungry enough they will eat it... was racing around like a short order cook..he said it wasnt good for her anyway) So I said "enough" she gets royal canin calm mixed with 2 tsps wellness wet and warm water, gets gravy like. If She doesnt eat it she waits until the next meal..it took a day but now she devours it 2 times a day...she gets treats of cottage cheese and bits of turkey and chicken and an occ egg white. or piece of romaine lettuce stem ....poops are firm, and she is very happy... |
FRESHPET HAS WORKED FOR US ALSO...THE CHICKEN TURKEY VEGETABLE ROLL...5 STARS ON PET ADVISOR...FRESH FOOD...AND NOT EXPENSIVE. MUST KEEP REFRIDGERATD 7 DAYS....MAKE OTHERS AS WELL...ITS REALLY GOOD FOOD...HIGH IN PROTEIN...SOME SUPEMARKETS CARRY IT AND PETSMART...IN ITS OWN REFRIDGERATOR IN STORE. NO PRESERVATIVES OR NITRATES. IT SMELLS SO GOOD, YOU'LL WANT TO TASTE IT.:animal36 |
My dog is mega picky eater too. I've been switching foods,& at the beginning he likes the change but gets bored super fast. In addition, I recently adopted a beautiful shihtzu who's owners feed only human food. Because I know the benefits of eating dry food (dental-wise), this is what I do: I make eating time a game I take one Kimble at a time, and toss it rolling like a ball through he floor. My yorkie loves fetching balls, so he chances the Kimble and eats it. I tried this technique with our new furball, who had eaten human food all her life, and it alctually also works! I think modeling helped too; the shihtzu saw the yorkie and it became motivational competence. Try it out & let me know if it worked :D |
Alice hides her kibble all over the house! a few bits in her bed..a few bits in my bed...a few bits on the sofa... a few under my desk...i have no idea if she actually eats any of it! :-) |
Hi, my Bei was actually very picky eater too. I don't know as with his ex-owner, he ate very normal for the brand she gave to him. Though with me, he would rarely eat his kibbles, even left some no matter I already mixed with wet food. but now that I changed his food into royal canin, his appetite has got a lot better, he just eats that dry without anything added on it. Strange miracle. |
