My Yorkie DESTROYS her toys - ideas? Our yorkie is now 1 year old, and destroys all toys that she gets within DAYS of getting them. We've tried Kong Wubba's (she's had 3) and they are reduced to rags. Balls, ropes, and they are all destroyed. I'm happy to say she only destroys her toys and nothing else around the house, but my husband just bought her two balls held together by heavy rope for about $7 and it's in shreds. Does anyone have any recommendations for a very heavy chewer? Thank you so much!! |
Charlie did that up until he was about a year old and then he quit. I chalked it up to him teething. I would buy him the rawhide bones to gnaw on...I know some people don't like them and i watched him very carefully with them but its the only thing he didn't tear to shreds. |
Try the black Extreme Kongs. My heavy chewers have not destroyed those. For soft toys, I make my own squares and bones out of polyester/cotton blend material with a tight weave (makes it more difficult to tear with teeth). I use premium stuffing from the fabric store and Kong squeakers from the pet stores. They aren't the cutest toys in the world, but my boys love them and can't destroy them. My boys also do well with Ty Bow Wow Beanies for some reason. I am working on carrying these in my soon-to-open boutique. Be careful with any kind of rope. You don't want your pup ingesting a bunch of string which can cause blockages. I'm sure you know, but supervise your pup with any toy and check toys frequently for damage. |
Romeo tore up all his toys within hours! I found that if I got him toys designed for larger dogs those would last a bit longer :D. I think sometime after he turned a year the chewing stopped and I have a toy chest full of new toys. |

besides the black Kongs, buy some beef femur bones that are about 2 to 3 inches long. They can't splinter these at all. |
I've purchased toys at Dollar Tree, they have a small selection but when my lil guy destroys then I don't feel so bad, lol. You can make knot balls out of old jeans as well. |
ZoE is a toy destroyer too! All stuffed toys are defluffed & squeaker removed, and then decapitated & delimbed within about 10-15 mins. I reattached the head & limbs and sew up the holes and it becomes a 'skineez' type toy. She also destroys any of her rubber squeaky toys. And chews the "legs" off her cuz balls. She's never chewed her kongs though....I don't think she realizes she could...she just assumes they are for stuffing treats inside for her to lick out :p. I too have made her some toys out of heavy canvas. I doubled stitch all the seams, turn right side out, stuff it and put a squeaker inside and then sew the edge on top....triple reinforced!!! They last much longer than anything I've every bought, but aren't real 'cute'. |
Doodlebug is my "destuffer". If I give him a toy with stuffing 5 minutes tops and I have a destuffed toy. There are two toys that he loves and either have stuffing but are fabric. Bottle buddies are great! Their stuffing is an empty water bottle. I've bought them from PPE in the past but they don't seem to have them in stock right now. Here's a link to Target instead. AKC Bottle Buddies Dog Toy : Target Also Skineez are another favorite in our house. They have no stuffing either. Here's a link for those as well. Crazy Critters Raccoon Dog Toy 24"x2" : Target |
My 3 lb. Jilly tore up every toy she got, some quicker than others. She let some "live" longer. I never did find anything that she didn't eventually destroy or mar to the point I would take it away from her. I just sighed and gave up, realizing she would always cost me in the dog toy department as everything had to get replaced frequently. |
My Bella is the same....new toy lasts 5 minutes if it's lucky...lol...Every stuffed toy is now a skinee....nylabones even the larger she chews the ends off them. Kongs she chews the ends on them also. The worst thing is she swallows what she chews...She has pooped a rainbow of colors...lol I love to buy her new toys but it just seems such a waste of money. The kong wubbas...she has now gone through three. The tennis ball with the ropes, she chews a hole in the ball and shreds the rope. The ones with the water bottle inside, she figured out how to open up the velcro and then started to chew on the bottle. Her toy basket is pitiful looking as I still keep the stuffless toys because she still carries them around and wants us to throw them to play fetch. If anyone ever finds something that endures the teeth from these 6 pound pirenahs ...please let me know....by the way she is 21 months old so I don't think it is a teething thing.....oh and I forgot about my new sandles, she LOVED them |
Charlie does too. He has a favorite one. It's a blue bunny rabbit. Poor thing doesn't look like a bunny anymore though. lol But it's still his favorite. Out of a box of toys he always goes for the eyeless, noseless, earless blue bunny. :D |
We put old chewed up toys (like tennis balls and kongs) into socks and let them play with that! |

I, also, have a "destuffer". Abigail cannot seem to rest if there is one toy in the house left with stuffing. She's six y/o , so I cannot attribute it to "teething", either. At least she quit eating the house (yes, literally) when she grew up. I would be careful of nylabones. Indestructible though they may seem; many a pooch has gone to the vet to discover balls of nylabone inside tummy. |
