Louie doesn't like toys?? My little Louie is about 3 years old (we think--he's a rescue, so there's some guesswork happening there), and he won't touch any toys. I am wondering if there is a way to help him like toys. I guess it's no big deal, I just like to spoil him. Any ideas? |
Both of my babies are toy addicts. I did in the past have a chihuahua that wanted nothing to do with toys, so I guess it really depends on the dog. What have you tried so far? Oh & :welcome4: 2 YT! |
We started with a little squeaky soft dog, and he pays attention to it when we squeak it, but if you put it down near him he just sniffs it and walks away. We also tried a rubber bone with little rawhide discs on it. He LOVES rawhide, but won't touch that thing. I wonder if he had some previous owners who yelled at him if he touched the kid's toys or something. |

Give it some time and try what you can. Maybe he'll come around. If not then I hope you'll accept the fact he just doesn't have it for his toys. |
My first yorkie did not like toys and we had her since she was a pup. We tried everything to get her interested to no avail. So I think each dog is unique. |

My (recently adopted) Zeus has little interest in toys and playing. We've only had him 3 weeks so I don't know if this is because he's still settling or if he truly has no interest. I hope it's the first. :( He loves dogs and people, but is hesitant in playing. He'll just sit and watch us play with the cat, like he doesn't understand. How long have you had your baby? |
We've only had him a few days, so it might just take time. Of course, if he doesn't take to toys it's no big deal, I just want him to be happy with us.:) He's had a rough time and he's such a good little dog, with lots of love to give! I feel very lucky to have been the person that rescued him! |

That's very good to know! Little Louie is in good hands  Let us know if you have any luck with any toys for him down the line :) |
My Hope is the same way, I've had her since she was 6 months old and bought her from the breeder... But she's never liked playing. She loves to chew on bones and will "steal" all the bones and put them in her bed, but she never had much interest in toys and playing. In fact the only time I've ever seen her play is with her two pups Bambi and Kayla. She will rough house with them a bit, but it's always very mild. Maybe in time he will play, if not, maybe he will be just the best cuddle bug like my Hope. |
Toys How about 'toys' that include a treat inside or attached to them? One is a ball with holes into which you can put peanut butter or soft treats. Or, as others have said, perhaps your baby just does not like toys. LOL. |
My Petunia, who is also a rescue that we've only have for 3 days now, doesn't seem to like toys either. I'll keep trying with her. |

My dog was a little over a year when he came home with me. He's not a yorkie ..he's a small poodle. However, it was the same exact thing you are describing. I bought many different types of toys, and with the squeaker toys...it would get his attention when I squeaked it, but he wouldn't touch them. I too was worried that he might never play, because with mine, it was very clear that he didn't even know what toys were. He wouldn't even touch any type of kong filled with every treat I could think of..nothing. I was doing clicker training with him because my dog had clearly missed very critical socialization of anything and everything possible. I also began using it with his toys ...just to teach him it was a good positive thing to go up and touch his toys. But other than walking up and touching them...still nothing. I continued to try to initiate play with his toys and I put some in his bed and house. He never responded other than touching them with his nose occasionally. Then one night I'm cooking dinner and I hear this squeaking start, and once he started ...it was like he couldn't stop! It was if he had finally realized all of the fun he had been missing all of this time. Now there isn't a day that he doesn't squeak one his toys.:D So, maybe it could be that it might take him a little while to fully settle in. Either way, I know he is going to bring you so much joy!! |
Shortly after posting about Petunia not liking toys, this morning, she went nuts in the back yard trying to get a small lizard. I may try a lazer pointer to see if she'll go after that. A friend of mine also suggested an odd thing that her dog likes. Musical cards!!! Her dog goes crazy opening and closing them, lol. Of course, a dog can't be left alone with them. |
Toys LOL! They sure go for quick moving lizards! I know my previous dog {who is now an angel :-(( } was bitten by one and she HATED them afterwards and woe betide any lizard that came into her field of view, it was WAR! So it just takes the right stimulus and you are off and running. There are no rules with these pups, we just know we love them! Good Luck! |
