Hmm..starting to snarl and growl at toys? Hi, Okay, like most people here already know...we haven't been puppy parents for 12 years now. Bella has started to snarl and growl at her toys. Is this normal? It doesn't sound like she's playing it sounds like she's wanting to attack/fight them. When I pick her up while she's playing, she'll growl, and then turn and lick my face. Why is she snarling and growling at her toys and growling at me when I pick her up to say hello? She plays fine with Sprout (our Brussels) as he has taught her what is appropriate biting and what isn't when playing with a dog. So..she's not vicious...I just can't figure out what's up with the snarling? |
Jimmy has been doing this recently too. He is 6 months old now and started when he started teething his canines. I think he is getting agitated or showing aggression to the toy in his own little world but he doesn't get mad at me or anything. He will growl for a second but I don't think it's at me but his built up "Yippie! I'm gonna get you" when I pull him from his toy. |
Well I'm not alone at least, thanks Beecee. :) She stops growling the moment she realizes it's me that picked her up...and not a "toy attack from the side". She licks me, but it is still a bit alarming to hear such a mean little sound from such an otherwise lovable little fluffball. |

Lmao! That's a great way of putting it!! I think it's super cute when he growls at his toy. He is SUPER feisty. I'm thinking these yorkies are. Shoot, he want's to beat up the great big garbage truck when it comes ;) Your baby is just trying to teach the toy who is boss ;) |
CaLi does this aLLLLLLLL the time. I have got her stuffed(durable) dogs, and she wrestles and flips em over, tackles em, pins em down, drags em, pounces on em, hides from em, barks etc LMFAO!!! I even found one that has a little matchbox size device inside and you can record a 'message' (it was a cheesie Valentine's gift from an Ex:rolleyes:) anyways, I recorded a long on-going Wuf wuf wuf..grrrr woof woof grrr 'message'.....this is genius. She bites the ear and stimulates the toy and plays forever. This actions are totally normal. I think its a plus that you have a dog with personality and "pretending" skills. also, its self entertainment abilities. Sometimes if I wrestle and roll around with CaLi and throw her toys for 10 mins or so...then put her in her pen...she goes after he doggies like..."ok now who's gonna get this first?" lmfao!! Like she's opening a can of whoop some butt...hahaha. Only start to worry if your dog nips or starts to be aggressive AT you...:thumbdown |
Maybe pretend hunting,it is an instinct. All of mine have done this as young dogs. They even play tug of war with toys and growl at each other, its just play. |

They were originally bred to hunt mice and rats in the old clothing mills in england. that's why they "hunt & dig" relentlessly :) |
Gracie loves to kill her toys. Maybe once or twice a day she will get in the killer mode and shake the daylights out of one of her toys after she has barked at it and growled for a while. Sometimes she will bring the toy to me so I will make it shake and fight her a bit more. I'll shake it around and squeak it for her and she gets all crazy. She enjoys it and is in no way aggressive with people. She's just a crazy toy killer. She doesn't even tear the toys apart she just likes to scare them I think! |

She laid down & was quiet for a few minutes then all of a sudden...in the dark, she was growling, snarling, rolling around and making all kinds of attacks on a Kong toy that has a bell inside. She was psycho!! Eventually after 10 minutes she was tired, she slept all night :) Mommy's little attack dog :) |
