Having anxiety about this.. Hi I'm new to to site/forum and I'm hoping that someone can help me out! :) My little Baci is 8 months old and we've never left him alone for more than 3 hours at a time...my question is, is it all right to leave him for more than that? We have a wedding to go to but I'm feeling SO anxious about leaving him alone and was wondering if I'm just going crazy or if someone else has experienced this anxiety and how do I ease it for both of us?! LOL Thanks!:) |
aside from the obvious...... fresh water, food, a new unique toy and someone to check in on pup, if possible. What I remind folks is that when they are home there's usually T.V., radio, noise going on. The silence when pup is left alone must be mighty uncomfortable when he is used to day to day activities and the noise that goes with...I've always left mine with something running to break the silence. Also a lived in item of your clothing in his sleeping place is comforting as well. Be aware that as pup adapts to your absences, he'll likely snooze through most of the time you are away. |
I'm sorry I don't know the EXACT place I recently read this...but I've been interested in this myself lately. We've had Daisy about a month now, and she is roughly 3 months old. What I read said that it is OK to leave your dog in the cage for as many hours they are months old. So, 3 months = 3 hours 8 months = 8 hours This may be TOTALLY not the norm here, but like I said, that's what I recently read. I personally would feel bad leaving them alone for longer than an average work day no matter what the age...and we have not left her alone for more than a few hours so far ourselves. But think about all of the people who own dogs that DO have to leave their dog in the cage for the work day. I'm sure the dogs are OK. Just give LOTS of attention the hour before you leave, and give access to some food/water. But if you have the opportunity to keep them out of the cage a bunch, than that's awesome!! :) |
Welcome. I would think he could be left for 6-8 hours with food and water. They sleep a lot when they are alone. |
Many thanks for all your replies! I feel much more at ease after reading them..I thought of a million and one things that could go wrong with our baby while we're out so I think I was just overreacting :) And the suggestions about leaving an item of clothing with him is GENIUS! :D We'll leave the t.v. on for him...we won't be gone for too many hours-maybe 4-5 hours so I'm hoping he'll be sleeping peacefully when we get back. :) I've heard about the crate training myself and leaving them in while they're alone for hours on end makes me SUPER nervous! I've read the info about the age equaling the hours you can leave them but I've also read that you shouldn't leave them too long while they're little like that because they can't hold their business for that long and it can be harmful so I'm TOTALLY torn and confused about that...I'm sure one of the many sages on the site can help us out on that :) Again, many thanks for the replies, the suggestions and above all the warm welcome! I have found a comfy home for me and my Baci ;) |
