Best toys, chew and otherwise for new 19 week puppy? We are bringing home our new 19 week old baby girl (Izzy) this weekend. Wanting to see what are the best toys for a new baby, for teething and just playing. So looking forward to bringing her home. Thanks so much for all of the useful info on this site. |
I just wanted to say Welcome to YT and congrats on your new baby girl. I don't know what is best for puppies as my first dog, my yorkie boy Kaji, is my very first dog and he was a young adult when he finally came home. Best of luck and try not to go over budget! That's one of the hardest things since there is so many cute things for them. :) |
Welcome to YT and congratulations on your new baby! Choosing toys and chews can be a bit of a challenge. Different puppies have different tastes and requirements. Whatever you choose, supervise closely at first and check toys frequently for damage. Maximo liked his Kong, but I had to get the little black Extreme Kong because he chewed right through the regular one. Anything rubber can be dangerous if you have an extreme chewer with those razor sharp baby teeth. Stuffed toys with squeakers are good, but some pups are crafty enough to tear them apart to eat stuffing. Really fuzzy toys or rope toys can also become an eating bonanza. I don't recommend Nylabones. Chews should be all natural and completely digestible. Stay away from rawhide. Most Yorkies enjoy bully sticks. Enjoy your puppy and be sure to post pictures! |
I got my puppy the teething stick made by kong he loves it :D Also what are the bad sides of rawhide? I know they tend to break and be sharp, thats why I didnt buy any... just wondering the other reasons |
2 Attachment(s) No rawhide......too many deaths from those. I would also stay away from bully sticks which can cause serious diarrhea and will keep him from wanting his food. He's at the age when it's very, very important to learn good eating habits, so I wouldn't give treat either unless it's a little dried fruit or fresh apple or carrots. Nylabones are safe if you get the ones that are soft enough that you can leave a nail imprint. No rubber toys with squeekers that are in view, as they can get those out and choke to death. Little stuffed toys that have squeeker inside is fine. One of the safest things to give is a beef femur bone. One that's not over 2". Just take the marrow out of the middle, cut off all the meat and wash really well. It's the primal and favorite way to go. ;) Ask the butcher for those. You could also just buy a steak with the little round bone in it. Here is what I buy for my girls................ |
Rylie has a few favorites: 1.) She loves her mini balls (at first I bought her the Kong squeaker mini tennis balls, but I only give those to her if I'm around and we're playing together because she likes to chew the fuzz off... I also recently purchased rubber balls that have little bumpies and squeak, she likes those too, but they're a little bigger than the kong ones). 2.) She loves this little soft horse toy my sister got her. It has different textures inside it. For instance it has crinkly legs, but a squeaker middle, and a soft stuffed head. My sister bought it from Target. 3.) She also likes her nylabones. I got her the pack of 3, but only gave her the blue (with the bumpies) and clear one. I don't think the edible ones are a good idea nutritionally, but that's just me. She likes the blue one best. Nylabone Small Dog Value Pack at PETCO I bought her a no stuffing raccoon toy from the store and a bunch of toys from mimimomo's site toplinepet.com (including the Hide-A-Squirrel that I'm banking that she will LOVE) for Christmas. I will let you know how she likes those if you would like. |
My little man loves his nylabone. I think it's safe because he can't chew it to pieces and it's not too hard. He also has a kong but he doesn't like it as much. Becareful with the stuffed squeaky toys as the squeaker can be dangerous. Mine also loves the kong balls. |
Presto loved and still loves all his petstages toys :) ps we will adding them soon on divapuppy |
