Alternatives to Wood Lacie of course loves chewing on wood. My dad doesn't realize she can get to his stashes of wood scraps when he lets her run around the yard slightly unsupervised. [Side rant]: He's the only one in the family who thinks she'll be fine running around like that, but the rest of us disagree. She gets into things she's not supposed to, puts herself in danger, and it's impossible to get her to behave after she's had that much freedom. But try convincing HIM of that. [/rant] Anyway, she seems to prefer the texture/flavor of the wood more than her hard rubber toys or ice cubes at times. Is there something else we can offer her so she's not ingesting slivers and chunks of wood? We're trying to stay away from things that could make her more possessive of her toys (i.e., raw hide or meat flavored or filled items). She's about 16wks old right now. |
The only think I was think of that would b hard like that are Nylabones. You can get plain white ones or you can get flavored ones like this: Nylabone Puppy Starter Kit - Toys - Dog - PetSmart Look at this link for all of the other Nylabone options Dog Toys and Related Dog Accessories | PetSmart |
Also try hooves... filled or just plain. I recently had a foster puppy who loved wood - she would drag pieces of wood in from the garden and proceed to destroy it, leaving pieces all over my house. Hooves really helps - after a month of redirecting her attention to a hoof and taking the wood away, she no longer drags the wood in and prefers to chew the hooves. To entice her, I sometimes add a filling like peanut butter or a home-made liver and oats filling. |
I will try this also. I have a puppy that is teething and loves to chew on anything wood. Including trying to chew on my rocking chair legs. |
I have an in home trainer that gave me a listof items that your dog may like to chew on with alternatives, so here goes: wood: hard rubber toy or slightly flexible bone metal: cool/frozen hard rubber toy or grinding bone fabrics: stuffed toy or fleece chew rop fringes: toy with tassels paper: crinkle sounding toys (ie...plastic water bottle) your clothing: scent treated items your skin: soft flexible chew toy hope this helps. |

my dogs LOVE bully sticks! had never heard of them until i joined YT. |
I just want to say thank you to Marilize. I tried the hooves and they work awesome. Only one of my chewers does not like them but oddly he has quit chewing. LOL Now he has moved on to paper. If he sees it on the floor he will play with it and rip it up. I will try a bully stick too. Funny side note: when I first brought out the hooves I put them down on the floor. My 2 Yorkies would get close and then stretch out as far as they could and bark at them. My girl finally saw the other 2 dogs chewing them and gave it a shot. She now hoards them if they walk away from them. I find them all in one chair. She softly growls at them when they come looking for them but then will jump down and the dogs retrive theirs. It is like she is saying "okay I am not looking, go ahead and take yours back". |
