Cleaning soft toys? I am in the process of destinkifying Roxie and the house after her stay at the SPCA for spaying last week. I gently bathed her this morning (even shampooed her twice!) and am in the process of washing her pillow and all her blankets. I have Febrezed the heck out of all soft surfaces she has laid on in the living room and kitchen, and even cleaned my couches with leather wipes (lemon scent!). Now comes the tough part - her toys. Most of them are soft, plush toys. How do I clean them? I always remove all of the tags from her toys, so I don't have manufacturer instructions. Do they go in the washing machine? Do I just give them a dose of Febreze? Spot clean with some soap and water? I have plenty of toys to cycle in while the others dry, I just don't want to ruin any of her favorites. Tips? Thanks! |
I just throw all the toys in the washer & dryer. Even the little "kong" toys that look like little animals(cat & octopus) and all the doggie blankets. I never use any sprays in my house, they give me terrible headaches so I think they could upset my baby also. |
I agree with YorkieD, I would be careful with the Fabreeze -- might not be good for the pups. I wash all of our plush toys in the washing machine on gentle cycle, then throw them in the dryer. :) |
I do the same. I only like the stuffies you can put in the washer. The toys for dogs and babies are usually safe to wash. The ones you can't put in the washing machine usually have sawdust or little beans in them and you don't want to give that kind to them anyway. Note: If you have a stuffed toy that is not a dog toy that needs a clean-up, I have used a baby wipe to freshen. |
I would never spray febreze on anything that a dog's mouth touches. washing machine is fine. |

I to put the toys, bedding, blankets etc in the washer and dryer. I don't use fabric softner on them though. I have put dryer sheets in with them when static is up but only for like 5 minutes at the end of the cycle. I also keep Tide Free just for use on their things. For touch ups, as I only wash the toys when they are pretty soiled, I use my shark steam mop on them. I just pump it up good and sit it on them for about 45 seconds, then turn them over and do it again. I love steam for cleaning their things. |
