rawhide or no rawhide???
 
I have heard that is it bad for dogs to have rawhide....is this true? I have not gave my baby it before and she got some for xmas what do you guys think?

Don't give rawhide. Rawhide is not digestible and the pieces can swell inside their bodies and cause blockages. A better alternative would be a bully stick.

After what I've ready on the recent greenies post, I don't think I'll giving them rawhides either :( I did buy the himalayans but now i also wonder how safe they are. I've started giving mine more natural treats such as carrots and green beans but over course they chew those up way too quick. :(

Never give them rawhides. I almost lost Muffin when she was one or two yrs old. She had chewed a piece until it was soft and yucky then swallowed it - only it didn't go all the way down her throat. She choked and I had to get it dislodged. If I hadn't been able to do that, then I would have lost her. I had her upside down and everything else. Finally, it came out! Now, that would have been 1992 or 1993.

Well, now they have bully sticks. I gave those to Kacee. But she doesn't chew on anything anymore.

Just wanted to let you know the Himalayan chews are very safe :)

here's from the manufacturers website:

Forgot to add:

Rawhide is not the best for your lil one...there's a lot of alternatives on the market...bully sticks is one of Lola's favorite's :)

I know that the himalayan's are 100% natural and thats not really my worry. My dogs love them but when I saw the little hard pieces they have now become (which they are still chewing on), I started to wonder if these can also be a choking hazard...
My oldest even took one of the himalays and purposely dropped it on the floor so it broke apart into 5 peices.

My little Girl choked on a rawhide that got too soft and got stuck in her throat. Luckily I was right there and heard her gagging. I had to pull it out and it was literally like a 4 inch piece that was stuck down her throat! Scared me so bad!! No more for my pups!

The same thing happened to mine. So no rawhide since then.

What are bully sticks and where can I get them? I have been giving Harley rawhide but now think it best I not.

I thought I was quoting the question about the Himalayan chews breaking off....sorry....

LOL! If it CAN happen it will happen to MY dog! I got my first package of Himalayan chews and gave a small one to each one of my dogs! They LOVE them!! And I am so impressed at how long they last. They are just what my chronic chewing baby needs! But, after time they had two pieces chewed down to small pieces about 1 3/4 inch squares. (I really thought they were still big enough to not be a problem) My little one, 16 weeks old, got that pice wedged in ther mouth. I thought she was choking! LOL! I laugh now because I am already paranoid, but this little dog is totally hyper active so if it can happen it will to her. Anyway, I got it out and when they get that size or small enough to be a problem I will take it away all together. I am just wondering if it is ever going to end with my dog!
