Are rawhides safe? I tried to search for the answer but it didn't work. I rarely give rawhides because little 'wars' erupt in my household between the dogs and I find them in the sheets of my bed and other great places but I did just give one to a dog I have just started containing because she is bred, and I am now wondering if she works on it all day if there is some safety issue with them? She loves it but has already worn down a half inch of it in an hour. |
They really arent safe. They cant digest them so they could cause a blockage. Now saying that there are people on here that give them and havent had any problems yet but I wouldnt |
I thankfully am one of the people that have not had any problems with my girl chewing on raw hides. She is like yours. She can chew a whole small rawhide stick in about 2 hours. However, I have heard that they aren't good from one of my friends. Since my friend told me that I don't give her as many. I don't want to push my luck. |
i use togive them to Suzi until i foiund out they were not safe .SO now it is Bully Sticks. Try those. Your Yorkie will love them:) |
I use to let mine chew on them, they wasnt big chewers and seemed like we had them aorund forever. but the other day if my Yorkie mix had not come to me while in bed, she would of died. she had one that she had chewed on and soaked with slobber and it had reshaped itself and was then the shape of a burrito and it was stuck in her throat. i saw the edge of it and started pulling and it was so long, she could not breath. if I hadnt been awake she would of died. Ill never get them again. My daughters English bull dog once choked and swallowed one. |
Hot Rod got diarreha (sp) from rawhide chews so now they only get bully sticks. We get the ones that don't smell from AMD, a YT member. |

I had the same experience as Yorkieshadow. I had given Pippin a raw hide with the knotted ends. In the middle of the night Pippin was in bed making these little sounds. He had the bone in his mouth and I thought he was just enjoying the bone. I went to take it out of his mouth and the end had unraveled and he had swallowed it. It was about 5 inches long and still attached to the rest of the bone. If I hadn't woke up and removed it he would have choked. |
They just are not safe. Stewart has had rawhides before, but I try not to give them to him at all. I have to stop my DH from giving them to him. OMG I think I would die if anything happened like that to Stewart. I have found the bully sticks at PetSmart and at first, he didn't like them, but them he must have gotten the flavor of it and went crazy!!! They are more expensive than the rawhides, but they aren't hazardous. Also if you give them granulated rawhide it is safer. I am so glad that the two posters with close calls had good outcomes on their "if we weren't there" experiences! |
Oh Boy, you wonder why they are still able to be sold still, huh? They are so popular too, it's crazy.:( |
I really never thought they were a problem until Rhianna came along. I used to buy the small Dingo bones for Brody . .he did chew them, but mostly liked to walk around the house and then bury them . . .:D When Rhianna first got hold of a Dingo bone she chewed that thing like there was no tomorrow . . .she got the knot off at the end and I had to pull it from her mouth, she would of choked. Soooooo, I searched my entire house and found all the ones Brody had painstakenly buried and threw them all away . . .:( I haven't bought any chew bones in months . . .I will try the Bully sticks though . . . |
Well, I went and bought 2 bully sticks today... We were watching a movie (the dogs and I) on my bed..... all of a sudden I smelled something pretty gross..... it was the bully stick. I will let them keep them but they aren't allowed on my bed with them anymore and they smell a lot worse then the 'ol rawhides....That's better than giving them something unsafe I guess. |
I don't know if you looked or not but it is actual dried Bull! |
It's actually gross when you think about it! LOL |
