what kind of toys my bloo is a ball of energy. I cant get him to pick a toy the only thing he really seams to play with is his rope and then he will lick all the stuff out of it. but im trying to keep him entertained during the day and i'm out of ideas on what else yorkies tend to like to play with. :animal-pa |
how old is your yorkie? my winston had no interest in toys what so ever until he was about 6 months old! |
as far as toys go, mine likes anything that squeaks or makes some sort of sound. Also loved nylabones at that teething age. Now she loves her everlasting treat ball the best. |
Baxter loves the tennis ball toys with rope arms and legs. He loves to play fetch with them and then beat himself with it by whipping his head back and forth with it in his mouth. Whatever you do don't buy anything rubber. No matter how indestructible it claims to be, Baxter usually eats and swallows at least 2 bites before we get home from Petsmart. |
the only thing andy treats like a toy is stormy and the cat! hes 8 months and ive tried everything |
There was an article in the Whole Dog Journal about vinyl dog toys and how dangerous they can be due to the toxic chemicals used in the processing. Phthalates can interfere with development in young puppies, cause reproductive damage, and liver damage. The article states that chemicals migrate via the dogs saliva increasing the toxic effects. That was enough for me to go confiscate all the vinyl squeaky toys we have and get rid of them. (They don't recycle well either so that is another problem). FYI The Whole Dog Journal recommends looking for toys made of materials that are natural or nearly so, such as natural rubber, real bones to chew, organic cotton or hemp. One of the highly recommended toys was Orbee balls from Planet Dog. Doggles has a new line of crocheted toys for small dogs. So if you crochet, make your own toys. I am going to go on a hunt to see if I can find crochet patterns for small toys. If I do, I'll share them! |
I learned to crochet just so I could make gruffle balls. If you do a search for them, you can find a pattern. I revised it a little for my babies. :) Finally a ball that is safe to throw in the house!! |
I knew there was one, just could not remember what the name of them were. Thanks! Now I have one more thing to add to my "To Do" list;) |
I recommend a KONG. They are grate for teething dogs and they bounce so they can toss it around them selfs if they get bored. You can even put snacks in them to distract them for a little while. :animal36 |
I recommend some squeak toys, particularly ones in the shapes of animals such as squirrels or rabbits. My Yorkie loves to chase after these toys and shake them to death with her head, as if she was killing them. The AKC sells toys like these at Target or Wal-Mart. |
toys Ours is 6 months old and has loved toys since we brought him home. He's like a toddler that all he thinks about is playing!! We recently bought a little cloth frisbee which he loves. I can throw it in the house for him to chase it. I don't leave it with him as he will tear it up within 10 minutes. He loves this round ball that is squishy with holes all in it. He stands on it and gets a good grip with his mouth. I love it because it won't hurt anything in the house to throw it. |
Hi! Abby recommends the ever lasting treat ball! It keeps her busy for hours!!! |
Mine love the cuz balls and also the krackle Jax made by Amber Lv |
Ditto on the krackle jax, mine with find one and chase each other for the one they have. Each dog has there own but they play games chasing each other for theres and then play with there own for awhile. It keeps them busy for hours. |
Kongs are great and mine like furry toys, just be sure to get ones with cloth eyes and noses as they tend to chew the plastic ones. |
Oooo this gruffle ball looks like fun once Nikko is potty trained well enough to get to run around the living room. I used to crochet, and I think I still remember how... where is this gruffle ball pattern? I tried to search for it on google and on this forum, but couldn't find it. Also, does anyone have any good suggestions for types of yarn that would be best to use? Thank you! Lauren & Nikko |
I found the pattern for gruffle balls on this website. Just scroll down a bit. Outreach Projects - Yarn, Yarn Supplies, Needles, Patterns, and Knitting at Playing With Yarn Wish I knew how to crochet! |
Thank you Nikitta34! I can't wait to try it... he's doing so well with potty training, we're about to expand his zone out of hard floors and into a little bit of the living room carpet. Perfect timing... Now does anyone have any suggestions on the type of yarn to use? Lauren & Nikko |
No prob, LemonLauren. The website says regular worsted yarn for the bigger (4") balls and baby yarn for the smaller (2"-3") balls.... I always like to use natural yarns like wool or alpaca, etc. But then you have to worry about felting when you wash the ball. Felted yarn is fine for dogs to play with, and a lot of natural dog toys are made of felted yarn. I've actually played around with making some felted yarn toys of my own. |
1 Attachment(s) my girls LOVE their loofah dogs!!!!! |

Otherwise know in our family as a bobo!! Gracie loves hers too :D |
Nikitta, thanks for the yarn suggestions too... I hadn't had the chance to do more than just skim through the 1-8 steps yet today, and I totally missed at the beginning where the article says explains the yarn. lol, life is so much more hectic with a puppy - I haven't survived on this little sleep since college! :-) Lauren & Nikko PS: I totally want to try one of those loofah dogs too - they look like fun! |
Everything is a toy!!! I have 2 girl puppies that are 12 weeks old and everything is a toy to them. They love my dirty socks the most! They have a lot of felt toys that I like because they are washable. They like their braided ropes, but eat the threads so I have to really watch them. They like to chew on each other the most!!! They also want whatever the other one has and can be seen carrying the same toy in each other's mouths. That is soooo cute! They have a puppy Kong, but aren't really interested in that right now. They must think their potty pads & poo poos are toys, because they sure like to shred them. Their most favorite thing in the world that they are not allowed to have, but sometimes manage to get ahold of . . . toilet tissue ;( Silly little things!!!:aimeeyork:aimeeyork |
Getting Your Yorkie To Try New Toys They Yorkietalk community has given you a lot of great ideas for toys to choose from. I think the biggest challenge is getting your pooch to at least try out the toy. One tip you can use is to place a new toy in a dirty sock you've worn from the same day, or one in the hamper. Make sure the sent really gets on the toy by massaging it all around. Then, give the toy to your pooch. They will show more interest in it, because it smells like you. Often times, this is all they need to begin investigating the toy further. :) Quote:

I bought LuLu a little stuffed duck, better known as "duck duck" in our house. It squeaks and she absolutely LOVES it. I can tell her to go get duck duck and she does. Also, a KONG. LuLu loves hers. I have put cheese crackers in it and also peanut butter. She loves it. Something else about duck duck that is funny. One of my very best friends got LuLu's sister, so for Christmas, LuLu gave Priss a duck duck. Only one problem.....LuLu didn't want Priss to play with it. She thought it was hers. Needless to say, my friend says Priss loves her duck duck as well. For the record, I got it at Pet Supplies Plus. |

How stressful is it?! I am bringing my pup home on Monday. She's 3 mo old. What should I expect? |
LOL, shoot me a PM. I was dumb enough to get a pup from a backyard breeder, and my pup had some nasty intestinal parasites (rrrrrrr!). Hopefully you've got something better going on... Please, PM me and we can talk a bit - I'm happy to discuss some of the stuff we've been going though, including the fact that puppies are even more work than I thought they'd be, lol. :-) But of course, totally worth it! I'm sure my experience will differ from yours, as everyone has unique experiences, but hey - it never hurts to ask. Lauren & Nikko |
