Cleaning Toys Most anything that gets chewed and dragged around is bound to pick up some grime. What's the best way to clean toys? Can rawhide chews be cleaned? :aimeeyork |
Stuffed toys can be tossed in the washer as well as the rubber ones, gentle cycle. As far as rawhide,IDK. I don't give them my vet advised agaisn't them. |
I put rubber and plastic toys like Kongs/Nylabones etc. in the dishwasher and run a "Sanitize" Cycle to get those clean. I put the stuffed/plush and rope toys in the washer with mild detergent, and then toss them in the dryer on low heat. Everything has come out beautifully! As far as rawhides go-I don't give them to my dogs anymore for a number of reasons, but when I used to give Emma rawhides, I would just toss them after a couple of days. The reason is that rawhide can't really be cleaned, since it's an organic compound, you can't really "wash" it. It collects dirt, dust, and lint, as well as bacteria and fungus from the air and from your dog's mouth. After a couple days, the bacteria grow on the rawhide (ever noticed it turns black or brown?)...so, I would recommend tossing them and giving a fresh one every 2 days or so. And, as always, please watch your dog closely when they have rawhide or other chew toys. Pieces can break off, and the bones can get too small, posing a choking hazard. |
I wash the rubber ones in the dishwasher, and the plush ones in the washing machine. |

Me too. Instead of rawhide you might want to try bullysticks or Flossies. Most all dogs love them, they are safer and they wont last long enough for ou to worry about cleaning them.;) |
i heard its also good to throw the plush-type toys in the dryer on high heat for a little while..it helps kill some of the bacteria that could be forming(in between washes!) and i agree with you Nikki-we LOVE the flossies!!(Avery's Favorite;) ..mine too cuz they are safe(of course i always monitor her when she has one!)& they dont get that smelly odor!!!!;) |
What Are Bully Sticks and Flossies? I agree there's no chance in keeping those big rawhide chews with the bacteria issues. I will give them to my sister's yellow lab who polishes them off in 5 minutes. So, why do the stores sell those huge ones that weigh at least 10 pounds? ---just a rhetorical question--- What are flossies and bully sticks? :aimeeyork |
No rawhides here.....but all the plush toys go into a lingerie bag or pillow case and washed on gentle w/ woolite. We don't have plastic or rubbers toys here, but I know a lot of people put them in the dishwasher. |
