Advice please? Possibly need to re-home our doggies :( Hi there! I have been a stay at home mum for 18 months. We have a black Lab and a yorkie cross. My partner was allowed to take the lab to work and he had him before we met. I got my little yorkie a few months ago as a rescue dog. Now I'm due to begin working full time and my partner is applying for a new job so we can relocate from Kent to Sheffield. As I'll be working shifts and he will be working full time we think it's unfair to have the 2 dogs sitting at home all day whilst we work full time. Does anyone have any advice? I don't want to re-home them but don't want to be a bad owner :( |
Doggy day care or day camp a few days a week. Or hire a pet sitter to come in for a few extra walks during the week. Not wanting to sound harsh but... when you commit to an animal (particularly a rescue) you should really think about long term and keep that commitment if you can. It's very hard on the dogs to be rehomed multiple times :(. On the other hand, if you can find a loving home that you are sure will be long-term, ... more power to you. Please don't get anymore animals though until you are ready to commit to the full expected life.... My two cents. |
I think if you can walk them before and after work they would much prefer to sit and wait for you all day rather than be rehomed. they will adjust and as long as you give them a daily job...(their walk) and some playtime I am going to guess they will adjust just fine. plus if they get along they will have each other to keep them company while your away...and as suggested above maybe you can have someone stop by to take them out for a midday stroll. best wishing to you. |
She wasn't rescued as such, a woman was getting evicted and I offered to take her Yorkie on to avoid going to kennels. Te Lab always went to work with my partner but when he gets his new job that would no longer be possible :( It's also difficult finding a rented place that will allow one dog let alone 2 |
Most dogs are at home while their humans work. At least they have the company of another dog, while you're gone. Best of luck on your move to my old home town of Sheffield :) |
There are lots of doggy 'day care' places popping up all over England now. A quick Google search for your area I'm sure there will be something. Or even if you know a young family member (who is old enough to look after them obviously) who would like to earn a bit of pocket money by coming and sitting with them/walking/playing with them for a few hours to break up the day? |
Hi there, I live in Kent too! I'm a new yorkie owner so can't give much advice, but maybe a dog sitter, or volunteer neighbor could help? There are lots of pensioner's in my area that watch the working neighbor's dogs, I know the guy next door to me always baby sits someone's working spaniel. It might be worth putting an ad out to look for a sitter when you move, I know the unemployment is pretty bad so maybe someone out there that is trust worthy would watch your pups who isn't working for a few quid a day. |

I have a lab mix ad a Yorkie. Both my girls are home alone while I am at work and the human kids are at school. They have each other to keep company and so far there hasn't really been any issues with them being home. Please consider getting a doggy companion a couple days a week for your own comfort but realize that they love you and will happily sit home and wait for you if they know that at the end of the day you're coming home to them. Then the greetings you get when you walk in the door will mean more to you than anything you've experienced before. |
