Holiday Question Hello everyone, my partner wants to take me abroad for a 9-day holiday on my birthday next month, however, my Yorkie has just turned one and although I've found someone willing to stay in our house while we're away, I'm still reluctant to leave him behind. He doesn't seem to get anxious when we're away for a few hours but we've never been apart for much longer than that so I'm wondering what would happen if we just disappeared for 9 days! Also, if in the future we were to take him abroad with us, what's your experience holidaying with your pet? Giving him the rabies vaccination also puts me off taking him on holiday abroad. Thanks, any advice is appreciated. Anne |
I don’t think leaving him would be a problem. I think it is a good thing to leave them with someone you trust. Peanut is super attached to me, but when left with my Mom he does really well. I think if he was with someone he really didn't know- it might be a problem. So just make sure whoever will be staying with him, knows him well and make sure he is fond of them and comfortable with them. Maybe a couple times a month that person can come over and play with him, take him on walks, spend some time with him so he gets alone time… I have never taken Peanut abroad so hopefully someone else can you give you info on that!! Good luck with your Bday travels and Happy Early Birthday! |
I agree that it shouldn't be a problem to leave your pup with someone you know and trust. We left Princess Sophie with friends when she was only 4.5 months of age and she did great! Of course she was all over the DH and I when we got back but she did really well. |
I agree that he should do fine unless he has terrible separation anxiety and won't eat when you are away from him. Choosing the proper person to care for and look after him safely and securely is going to be the biggest issue but I suspect he'll do fine if that person is trustworthy and very, very cautious about his security around doors and when outside. I'd be sure he is microchipped and wears his ID tags at all times when I was away so in case he does escape somehow, he can be identified and hopefully returned to his home. |
Thank you for all your replies, they do put my mind at rest. Of course I'm still reluctant to leave him behind, I will probably be the one who suffers from separation anxiety :) He is microchipped, it's the law here. He doesn't know the person who would be looking after him so I will have Jake spend some time with him before we leave. Thanks for the birthday wishes! |

More replies and tips! thank you so much! Very good idea to confirm the micro-chip details, it would be awful if he got lost and I couldn't get him back because of wrong MC details. I don't want Jake to stay at someone else's house and I also have seven cats so my friend will move into our house while we're away and will look after all of them. I will make it a point though that we leave some of our clothes for Jake...good idea, he's always sniffing around :) thanks for the holiday wishes! |
