iNCONTINENCE in a senior yorkie My little yorkie susie is 14 years old and has been diagnosed with congestive heart disease and have been given 4 to 8 months to live, that was in August, it is now December and she has started wetting herself when sleeping, we have her on a drug called vetmedin and frusemide which is a duretic and has been on it for a year and a half now but its only now the wetting has got so bad she does not wake up to ask us to go out, she wakes us up 2 or 3 times at night to let her out, can anyone suggest anything please? |
I'm so sorry you are going through this. Have you tried diapers? There are members here who can make you one based on her measurements, or you can pick up disposable ones at the local Petsmart, Petco, etc. |
NO I had not realised you could get incontinence pants for dogs, who on this forum could do this? |

When I had a senior Yorkie the vet prescribed a bladder control med, I believe it was called Proin. It made an amazing difference in her. I eventually began keeping her in a kennel at night. Such a sweet girl. I miss her. |
Would she lay on a PeePad to sleep? A smal child's diaper will fit a Yorkie, I just cut a hole for the tail. They are less expensive than doggy diapers here. |

One of my little old ones was on the exact same drugs for the same condition. It's the Frusemide that's the diuretic. When do you give it to her? Sometimes it helps to give it to her first thing in the morning. Other than that, I just used to get up with her a couple of times through the night to let her out. You say the vet says she has just a few months left? The vet told me my little one hadn't long, in fact when she first diagnosed it she told me to think of having just weeks left with her, not months. I was totally gutted as it was the first time I'd been told it was heart failure, she had only just turned 9 & had been fine up till a few weeks earlier. Anyway, she was put on the Vetmedin & Frusemide & went on to live for another three & a half years. So don't get too downhearted yet. Hope you get to share a lot more time with her than the vet has predicted. |
I have to give her the frusemide in 2 stages, one in the morning and one at night before her vetmedin tablet, 6.30 at night to try to get rid of all the water before bedtime and around 10am in the morning again after her vetmedin. Thanks for the positive comments regarding the vets diagnosis, lets hope she does last longer but now she is losing her ability to tell when she is weeing or not, she will ask to go out when awake and only wee's when asleep and amzingly will get us up in the night 2 or 3 times to let her out, I tried to get her to go on a mat near the door but she goes elswhere when we go out shopping:thumbdown Its been a year and a half since she was first diagnosed with the heart disease which is the first time they put her on the drugs. so here's hoping for the best:thumbup: I can only imagine the feeling you went through when your little one passed away, they are part of the family aren't they? |

You should use grain free diet for your dog and should add required supplement or natural supplement to it. You can also use incontinence pads for dog also. It will help a lot but most importantly you must visit the animal doctor. incontinence supplies |
