One Yorkie or Two
 

Hi everyone

I am thinking of getting another yorkie as a companion for my 2 year old Amy. The dog in question is the same age as her and has recently had her first litter. Amy has been spayed and never had a litter. I guess my question is, is an only dog a lonely dog and would she benefit from another housemate? Are 2 yorkies easy to cope with?

I think that whether or not two Yorkies are easy to cope with --- depends on the Yorkies.

We have 3 (one Maltese, a senior) and two Yorkies. We got the second Yorkie just a couple of weeks ago. He needed a new home, and I thought he would be a good fit with my other Yorkie, a 1 year old female, because he was very similar in size (both teapots) and they were born about 3 weeks apart.

With the addition of Chuy, the dynamics of our pack have changed, definitely for the better. Jezebel craves being around and playing with other dogs, and our senior wanted to have nothing to do with her. Jezebel would try to play with her, becoming totally annoying. I was constantly having to get the pup to stop antagonizing the senior. Since Chuy joined us, he and Jezebel entertain one another and our senior is almost entirely left alone, just as she prefers.

Chuy's temperament is really sweet, too, and he came to us 100% paper trained and already neutered. He hasn't had one accident, and he isn't into destructive chewing, and when he gets outside he sticks very close by and doesn't run off. My husband has said so many times that "he's not a bit of trouble," and it really is true.

So a second Yorkie (third dog) actually simplified our lives. Whether or not this would be true in your case, who knows? I depends very much on the dogs.

One thing that I would caution you on is that sometimes two females will have problems getting along, and I think this is especially true if they haven't been spayed. You need to get them together to see if they "click" before you make a permanent decision (and I would do this regardless of whether they are two females, two males, or one of each).

I have two male yorkies with an age difference of 2 years and basically they get on well for the most part but they do have a scrap from time to time and when yorkies fight they mean it so be aware of that. They do cuddle up together to keep warm at night. The only time we have trouble would be over food or treats so they are watched carefully at these times. I do think that 2 males get on better than 2 females but I guess it depends on the temperament of the individual yorkie.

I have 1 12 yo pekingese and 2 yorkies (both 2 yo). The addition of the 2nd yorkie cut down on how much trouble Sophie could find to get into while we were gone. She has been known to chew on the base boards. I think we have the perfect number. All 3 dogs get along great. Taffy, my peke, has always been a subdued dog and the yorkies bring out her out of her shell and keep her active. I think they keep my old gal healthy.

I have had only dogs and now have 4. I love the way they snuggle with each other and play and interact. I also loved having one as it was easier to take her with and cheaper and we had a special bond. So to me whatever is best for you and your baby.

I too have been thinking about getting Buddy a play pal, Buddy is 2.5 years old and I am sure sometimes that he would benefit from a friend, but I cannot afford another £350 on a pup and I would rather have a dog close to his age, but you cannot find Yorkies anywhere and if they are in a rescue centre they wont let you have one because you work full time! but this has never effected Buddy and he is only left on his own for a max of 4 hours!

Just to update you all. I found a beautiful little girl named Susie to hopefully be a companion for Amy. Unfortunately it did not work out, Amy was very territorial and showed quite a lot of aggression towards the gentle little visitor. Such a shame because she really would have made a lovely 2nd pet. I think Amy is destined to be a very spoilt only doggie.

There was a happy ending for Susie, she has now found a very happy new home, with a lovely cosy lap to snuggle on.
