poor little hector Can anyone please advise? My friend has a 12week old yorkie pup and it has severe flaky skin. it has been bathed with prescribed shampoo but to no avail. puppy has been checked and has no fleas, mites, horrible other things and all is ok there. vet thinks pup may grow out of it but it looks awful. it doesn't make the pup scratch at all. someone suggested using head and shoulders shampoo!!!! Really need some advice for my friend as she doesn't know where to start on forums etc. I think puppy is on James Wellbeloved puppy food and is otherwise very healthy and happy. Might I suggest that you put your question in the health section of the forum? The right people might not be checking in regional. Hope that a solution is found. |
It sounds like it could be a food allergy. But he's already on James Wellbeloved & that's one of the best anti allergy foods so not sure. Is it dry flakey or greasy? xx Meggie |
flaky Hi the puppies skin is very dry and flaky. He has had Sebolytic shampoo and that's not doing any good. His skin is his only problem and it doesn't itch! He's happy and eats well. Thanks for any advice - Sue |
Our vet not only gave us a medicated shampoo, but a medicated conditioner as well. This helped us a lot and I also switched his food. Hot Rod had really, really flaky itchy skin when we got him at 15 weeks. Poor baby's ears would flake off in big flakes like fish food! He's all better now, only itches on occasion. Plus the conditioner smells soooo good and makes his hair so soft and shiney! Good luck with your friends little one. Try isolating different foods but keep in mind, it will take some time before you see results, so tell your friend that this is not a quick cure, it will take time. Good luck. :) |
As a matter of interest I have the other half of the brother and sister duo and the female dog has no skin problems at all. It may also be something to do with the fact they are both rescue yorkies, born to a mum who had 13 pups by emergency ceasarian, 10 of which were already dead and rotting, 3 born alive, 1 had to be put to sleep and that left Hector and Maddie, along with their mum, they all survived the ordeal. The worst part was that Hector and Maddie's mum was mated with her own son accidentally. Therefore there are likely to be problems because of the relationship. These two puppies were 'rescued' so to speak along with their mum and all three are now very well (apart from the skin problem). Sad story but hopefully now a happy ending. Sue |

malaseb shampoo Hi I have had that problem for years with Susie and all the vets I have seen have not been able to tell me what it is, a vet I saw 3 years ago gave me some Malaseb shampoo which works a treat but you can only get it on prescription I had a new one last week which cost £20 which is very exoensive I know but the last one lasted 3 years so its not all that bad, I asked the vets assistant about a sell by date and she said shampoo doesnt have one, I dont use it all the time when the condition clears up i use a medicated one off the shelf for dogs so thats why it last so long so if you can get that one not all shampoo's are the same!!!! |
