Im learning a new language Thanks Yorkie Forums, Im learning a new language! I was on one of the non regional Yorkie forums, cant remember which, and everyone was saying their dogs went to the bathroom or went to the potty. I found their politeness confusing at first, thinking they had really clever dogs, then started to wish they had just said go for a pee. I found the expression "furbaby" rather perplexing too, but Im getting used to that. I also had to get used to the different terms for different grooming implements, but thats understandable. My new word for today is Biewer. I had never seen this before today, and really surprised to find that there was a genetic mutation that they had bred from. It just goes to show, youre never too old to learn. |
LOL My mom was born and raised in England and used some different words then other parents when I was growing up. |
Welcome to YT. And I hope you enjoy your exploration of the Biewer world. |
:) Did you find out how it's pronounced - that'll get ya! |
I was puzzling that. Is it pronounced beaver? Thinking this as I thought I read somewhere on the boards that they originated in Germany & in German W is pronounced V & ie is pronounced like our ee or ea. I'd never heard of them till I joined this forum & never seen one in England though I've kept Yorkies for years & been very involved on the show circuit with my other breed so come across lots of Yorkie breeders & owners. I know what you mean about learning new words though......don't they say... "Two nations divided by a common language." :D xx Meggie |
Yeh, something like that - I saw one site that said "bee-vair"; but I had no idea for ages! |
haha! I agree - you learn a whole new vocabulary when you enter the world of yorkies! :) and one of my mom's best friend is from England and they banter constantly about the correct 'word' for something - the English language is so interesting! haha As for the pronunciation. Like someone said, the Biewer comes from Germany. Well, I've only taken a few months of German classes, but I'm gathering that the correct pronunciation is indeed "beever." The e comes after the i, and whichever letter comes second, that is the one you pronounce (if the i comes second, you prounounce the i. Like in 'Streisand'). and, of course, the W is pronounced V. I know that probably made no sense. It's 5 in the morning, what do you want from my life? :p :D |

Just to make you feel more comfortable---we could throw things in the bin, go to the loo and pull on our trousers....and never ever go out without a jumper in the winter! |
And sometimes my bunch of mutts drive me potty! :D xx Meggie |
This thread reminded me that we used to have an old tape of Mike Harding doing a live show that had a sketch in it of the problems he'd had, on his first trip to America, with language. Anyone heard it? It was really funny. All sorts of problems like turning the tap on & couldn't fathom why everyone was shouting to force it. Or the shock he encountered after buying a fairy cake & complaining he'd lost his cherry. xx Meggie |
