Newbie saying hello with her two devils 2 Attachment(s) Hello all, Just found this great site. Myself and my parents have had yorkies for many years now. At the moment my Mum and Dad have Ford, a little boy who is 2 1/2 years old now and I have Shelby and she is 7 months old (I am a car nut hence the names) :p Shelby (7 months old) is the black one and Ford (2 1/2 years old) is grey. However I have a question about my little devils... Now I always thought there were only two types of Yorkie. Minature and Standard (please correct me if wrong). I have always thought that Ford was a Standard but you might be able to tell from the pics that Shelby is slightly larger than him. I have had them both on the scales and Ford is 7lbs with the hefty Shelby weighing in at 12lbs  She is a thicker set dog and her legs are a lot thicker than Fords. Can anyone tell me is this normal? She is not fat and is only 7 months old. I also thought she might have lost her colour by now? Cheers Avril |
Welcome to YT. I can't answer your question about the type of yorkie your babies are but they are adorable. |
I think standard is 4 to 7 lbs. If you spend some time on YT you will find out that Yorkie size has a wide range. Some have 2 lb. ones while others have 18 lb. adorable Yorkies. But mind you, they all have the same Yorkie attitude.:D:D:D |
Yorkies are yorkies. There's only one breed, no standard or miniature. Check the Yorkshire Terrier breed standard on the Kennel Club website. I show & judge some breeds so do know. They do vary enormously in size though. This is because they were bred from much larger terrier breeds including the Skye ( I have those as well) Clydesdale & Paisley terriers, both extinct now, & so you often get a size throwback as being a relatively new breed ( only a hundred & fifty years or so, not centuries old like many breeds) the breed isn't reliably set yet. The top weight limit for a show Yorkie in the UK is 7lb. But lots of the bigger ones make wonderful pets, especially where there are children. Your little ones are lovely. If you aren't showing size doesn't matter at all. xx Meggie |
Thanks for all the replies folks. Meggie, Thanks for that. Is settles an ongoing argument with my mum. She is adamant Shelby has been crossed with another dog and there is only two sizes. I actually love Shelby's size, Ford is dainty and I am a childminder so I don't want him near them incase he gets hurt. Shelby is the big bruiser who I don't worry about so much although I still keep her away from the "active" kids ;) I "might" one day breed with her but I need to do my homework first as I know it's not just about putting two dogs together. But then I know I would probably keep them all..... Not that keeping them all would be a bad thing :p |
Welcome to YT. |
Hi, and a big warm welcome to you. Lucky you, living up in beautiful Scotland! we lived there 6 yrs ago and i would go back in a heartbeat! I still miss it.:( As someone else said...Yorkie's are Yorkie's...people tend to assume that you have the Toys, Miniatures and standard sizes like you would with the Poodle...but thats not the case. Breed standard according to the kennel club is 4-7lbs...some are under (like my little girl) and some are over. People will always ask me if Pixie is a 'Toy' Yorkie..I do try to explain that there is no size catagory with the Yorkie and politely say, 'yeah, she's a little one'.;) |
Welcome to YT. I love cars also..love the names of your Yorkies! I knew a man with the last name of Ford who named his daughter Shelby...I'm NOT lying! I thought it was great! :D Donna in the USA |
Welcome to YT, its truely great on here. My first yorkie was in the 12-14lb range, my smallest 3.5 who came from two 6lb parents, her dad was sitting on two Challenge certificates at the time, most pet yorkies I've seen in this country tent to fall in the slightly larger range but they're much safer around small children. Having bred and shown myself it can be quite a surprise at the size difference in pups even in show bred parents, Hopes sister was easily 7lb. But they're all yorkies and we just love them for it. |
I am curious to know what size Hedley will be when he is fully grown. He isnt tiny, I can tell that at 12 weeks he weighs about 4lbs. Are they fully grown at 6 months? I didnt want a really tiny one though because we have 4 kids. |
Hi and welcome to YT. Your babies are cuties. My hubby is also a car buff, hence Hot Rod and Maggie May (mag wheels). lol |
