better living: UK or USA? or any other country I tried posting this in off topics but no response; hopefully someone can shed some insight here. thanks lately i have been thinking a lot about moving to a new country. I have been living in NJ, USA for over 15 years and I need a change. I wanted to hear some feedback from people who lived in the UK or any other country; to give me an idea if it's better to live in other countries; is there are jobs, how's everyday pace and are the people nice...... any feedback about any country is welcome! Thanks much. :) |
My son lives in Wales and the economy there is worse than ours. This is a big country, why not just try moving to a different area. The midwest is wonderful. The economy is more stable than many other areas, the weather is interesting and unpredictasble, but that is part of the charm. |

which states would you recommend. i am looking for a slower pace life style and a not so overpopulated area with friendly and nice people. you know NY and NJ area is great; but there 's too many people here and life is so fast and i am getting tired of that. always busy with work and not enough spare time to socialize; so now i find myself single at 32 and not being able to find a decent guy; not sure where they went :) |

If my kids would follow me I would move to the Carolina's. So. Carolina is beautiful and the people there are so friendly. I have to laugh when I'm at a stop light and it turns green no one hunks, they give you a second to hit the gas. LOL In NY if your not moving at the exact second the light hits green you can hear horns honking at you:( People there seem to be much slower in getting where they need to go without all the stress and rudeness of NY'ers. Yep I think people are rude in NY. I live there so I can say it. They are also very stressed and always in a hurry. I guess I am too.;) But I'm not rude. Really I'm not. Good luck to you wherever you go. |
thanks Archie; i think we might be rude because we are stressed with this stressfull and busy life and there's so much stress a human can indure. and i would like to make it clear to anyone; i am not trying to make NY and NJ look or sound bad; i am just looking for feedback and i would hate for this post to turn into a debate or argument :) |
I had to look twice to see if I was still on the Europe site as all of your answers have been from America! I've never lived anywhere but the UK so have no comparisons, other than how it is here in England now compared to how it was twelve years ago. We're not allowed to discuss politics on here, otherwise I would be having a real old rant about what this Labour government has done to this country, begun by an ex PM now making a mint in the States. :( If I was much younger I'd seriously consider leaving. xx Meggie |

I'm with ya Meggie. I live in the west midlands, still very much an area reliant on traditional industrial work so we've really been hit hard. Wouldn't swap the village I live in though, compared to many places its reletively quiet. Many of the people on my esate have lived here for a long time and I'm surrounded by family. The shopping facilities are fairly easy to reach but not too close if you get my meaning. |
I think where you live, whether it be the U.S. or another country would totally depend on the area of each specific country. Every country has their good areas and bad areas. Being a ex-navy brat I got to see lots of the United States and it is a beautiful country with a huge variety of climate and scenery. You just have to ask yourself what climate, what type of scenery and what type of life style you prefer. I love it here in Southeast Texas but I guess if I had the money I might move somewhere where it is not so hot and humid all the time. Of course I would not want to be that far away from my kids and grandkids either. I would never be happy living in a big busy city. I like the slower pace of country living but then I am 60 years old. The cost of living is really high in some areas too so you also have to consider that. Sometimes change is good. I hope that whatever you choose to do that you will find happiness and that special person along the way. I met my husband over 19 years ago through a personal ad in the newspaper and he is the best husband ever.:D There is much more to life than work so please take time to really enjoy life along the way. |
I was very lucky because when I got out of college I became a travel agent (parents were not happy - not what my degree was in:mad:) but I got to travel the world for about 12 years. Then I joined a major corporation who have moved me 12 times in the US. As children our family took month long vacations every year and travel the whole US. I can say without a doubt I could live in hundreds of places...the world is beautiful and area's of the US are fabulous. One of the things I have learned is that it doesn't matter where you live if you have friends...:) but having said this my suggeston is: Set a time frame (maybe couple of years) and then start taking vacations to all these places you might be interested in. You have to be adventuresome and you have to like people but if these are things you want to visit/maybe move to then go for it by yourself so you really get the lay of the land before you make a committment. |
thanks everyone for your insight; i would love to visit other states in the US; to at least see the differences and if i like them. living in NJ is getting to me; the life pace here is really fast and all i do is work; i was going to school too, and recently i received my masters. i know i should have more free time on my hand, but for some reason i feel a void. i feel all i do is work and then come home; it's getting to be very boring. what states would you recommend, anyone. thanks much for all your input |

i would love to find a singles group; i will look into it; but if anyone knows of any please let me know. thanks |
I'm in upstate NY and not rude either but I think maybe upstate is a little different? Although, I think maybe rude people are everywhere but mostly I would not recommend NY because of our high taxes. I would move out of the state if it were not for my family. Taxes here are very high and in fact, I can't afford to buy a new house, not because I couldn't affort the mortgage payment but because I can't afford to have my taxes double or triple. I pay about $3000 a year for property taxes now, I would easily double that number if I upgraded my home. And that's just property taxes.....:( |
i know it's so expensive to live in NY or NJ; rent keeps going up and up. i need to find a state where rent is cheaper than NJ and life is better and slower... |
Come to Yorkshire! You will find housing cheaper. The jobs situation isnt great at the moment, but there is work for professionals. Depends what you do. It is a large county (in English terms) which has a coastline, but much of Yorkshire is 2 hours drive from the coast also. There are a few large cities, but there is also lots of beautiful countryside. You might find the climate wet and not sunny enough, but we dont get extremes of temperature really. Do you want to stay in your own country or emigrate? Why not come over for a holiday? |
before making the big move- why not give this a try HomeExchange.com? its a way to REALLY live the life in another country with very little costs. |
If u love the warm weather, the nature and nice people i recommend you Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur) or Indonesia (i stayed in Bali). I had a job in that part of Asia and i fall in love with their culture and with people's attitude. OMG... i feel like crying when i'm thinking about that times. It is a big challenge but it worth to give a try! Plus, there are a lot of people from England established there! I remember that i was walking on the streets and people smile to me and wanted to talk to me. They are all so nice and curious to know about your country and culture! When you go shopping, they would bring you all the cloths in the store to try. And no matter you buy or not, they are smiling and wish you the best. And not to talk about prices.... which are so affordable! For rent, for food, for services... I was amazed about them, coz in Romania i'm used to pay a fortune for smth good. Ohhhh.... and not to forget about food!!! I'm still dreaming about those fresh and natural fruits and sea food with their specific spices! Yummy-yummy..... From my point of view, trust me, it worth to visit at least such a heavenly place like Bali or KL. All the best and good luck with your choice! |
Louisville, KY is great. It is a small city, so you can do city stuff and slow paced stuff. We have all four seasons. Our economy is not too bad. |
I will add that I have lived in Germany and loved it.. been to England and loved it but was there for a holliday.. I am Canadian, and I come to Florida for the winter.. if I could I would live full time in the states.. but that will not ever happen.. so I enjoy the winters and hope my health stays good for many years yet.. If I could live in the States I think I would love South Carolina, Not Florida as I could not due the humid weather and storms in the summer months..I have not been to Arizona yet.. one of these years I will do the west coast of the States.. I would also want to live where the ecomony is cheaper..like some have said about NY and NJ.. I think California would be expensive.. in fact Florida is not cheap if one was paying property tax.. I pay enough and live in an rv park that have mostly park model homes.. I love to travel and would love to take a year to just do that. Depending on your age as to what I would do.. If I had to do it over again.. in the 70 I could have come to the states and simply appiled for a green card.. that takes guts for a young person to do.. so I did not.. A neighbor of ours wants to retire in San Salador, or El Salvador.. says it is cheap.. and they go each year for christmas.,.. so I would do that for a few years too.. if I have enough years left.. |
move to norway ;) :D |
Hi there. England can be so beautiful. We have lots of gorgeous countryside. The health service is free, apart from if you are under 60 you have to pay for prescriptions, but you could have to wait for any hospital appointments unless it's urgent. Can be wet at times, but we don't really have (normally) very cold winters, usually wet. This year is the exception. I find most people are friendly where I live in Lancashire. My favourite parts of England are Lincolnshire and on the Devon coast. If I could afford it I'd live somewhere warmer like Southern Spain. Hugs Shirl x x |
I live in a village in Kent, Southern England. I wouldn't move to any other country, there is no place like GB. Scotland is the most beautiful country in the world. Kent is beautiful too, very green but does not have the splendid mountain scenery that Scotland has. |
Well I do live in CA. and I think it's just about the most wonderful state of all, BUT, with all the mideasterners crossing all our boarders to do us harm here and in the US, I'd give anything if my husband could retire right now so we could move to Spain or Italy. I lived in Madrid for 3 years and honestly didn't want to come back. I would of course live on the Meditrranean side, like in Malaga. So darn beautiful. My son is stationed in Spain at Rota and he's is completely in love with that country. It's awesome. I love their weather because it isn't humid, no snow (except in the mountains) and is just like our weather here........perfect in every way. |
I live in Florida, and am sick of the heat, no jobs, constant house foreclosures, etc. Looking into Kentucky and Missouri. |
Hi there I have always lived in Newcastle upon Tyne in the north of England. The countryside in Northumberland is beautiful but like every where it has its good and bad points. Labour goverment has ruined this country and although we now have a new goverment in power and they are trying to fix the problems we have here it will take a long time. I have never lived anywhere else so I havn't got anything to compare to but I can tell you that I love living in Newcastle. People here are friendly, hard working and down to earth.. There isn't many jobs at the moment but lots of people work away from home and come home at the weekends here. BUT I wouldn't recommend moving here.. not at the moment anyway if you have seen the news lol x |
