Need London England HELP Hi everyone.... I need some help or guidance and information if you know or can advise. I have a cousin who is in her later 30s - She has been living in London, probably for the last 15 years (although she was born and raised in Poland). She has MS and is in a bad state right now with her MS. She has been living with and being support by a man and they have a child together who has got be to about 9 ys old now. This guy has officaly left her, he moved out and wants to be done, he will see his son a couple of days a week. Here is what I need to know: 1. Is there such thing as Common Law Marriage in London England? 2. Can anyone recommend as REALLY good 'divorce or marriage type' lawyer - there is a HUGE amount of $ that SHE should be entitled too. England abolished clandestine or common-law marriages in the Marriage Act 1753, requiring marriages to be performed by a priest of the Church of England – unless the participants in the marriage were Jews or Quakers. Found this info on wikipedia Debi x |

Can't offer any specific advice other than to refer your cousin to an organisation called the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB for short). Their phone number will be in any local telephone directory here in the UK. The CAB should be able to advise your cousin on her legal rights in her situation, and be able also to advise on how to claim any state benefits to which she may be entitled. I hope things go well for her. |
As already has been posted, the Citizens Advice Bureau is a free service. Also if she is receiving state benefits and has no income she will be entitled to free legal aid, she should make an appointment to see a matrimonial solicitor (Lawyer) who will on the first visit ask her to fill in a green form which is an application for legal aid, the first visit is covered by this form and when the legal aid is approved she can then undertake the in depth discussions and legal processes that follow. This should be a formality, although I cannot advise on what process she she follow, the solicitor will be equipped to help her. Tell her not to worry and to get the legal advice she needs, these processes are in place especially for people like her. I wish her luck. |
I'm sure I heard on the news something about the law being changed to recognise people in long term relationships getting the same rights as married couples, but not sure if its been implimented yet, you know how slow this goverment is. She should be able to claim disabilty living allowance if not already. |

I also have MS and know what she goes through. It is rough and rough on the family also. I will keep her in my thoughts and prayers. She needs all the help she can get because stress is only going to make it worse. Does she have anyone (family) over there? |

I'm glad to hear that she's coming to the states. She needs family to support her and help her. I am 35 was diagnosed when I was 29. Is she on any type disiability for her MS? I am and it's not much but it helps. I hope she takes therapy because it helps. I am on the Avonex injections (only one I can take). |
