Heavyweight darling ... I have just weighed my darling Yorkie - Pepsi - who is 10 years old tomorrow and she is 14lbs. Following some discussions I read on one of the Threads I wondered what she would be classified as .. so definitely not a 'teacup' size! Before you all get jumpy about this weight, there is not an ounce of fat on her, just take a peek at her pictures in my gallery. Her line is from Pentop stock so my question is 'Does anyone out there have a Yorkie from this line and are they heavyweights too'? |
I think Pepsi is a "teapot" for sure!:D Humans come in all sizes, so why not dogs too? I don't have an answer to your question, but I just wanted to say welcome to Yorkie Talk! |
One of my old ones used to weigh 12lb. It isn't unusual to get the larger ones, you see quite a few around as pets. Not surprising really when you consider the breeds that the Yorkie was developed from, the Paisley & the Clydesdale were both biggish terriers & the Skye is one of the biggest. I have Skye terriers as well as Yorkies & the Skyes are very heavy, 35-40lb ish, big dogs on short legs. Yorkies were bred down from these larger breeds. So all lines can throw bigger puppies, even if you mate a small dog to a small bitch there's no guarantee that all the puppies will be tiny, you can easily get throw backs. After all, the Yorkie is a relatively new breed, having only evolved in the late 19th century, when you compare it to some of the other breeds that go back hundreds of years & have had much longer to fix the type. Some of the early famous Yorkies that were shown in England as late as the 1920s were well above the current show weight. |
Not so heavyweight after all ... Thanks so much for your responses Julia and Meggie. I began doing some research on the breed following my first posting and have discovered that she isn't such a heavyweight after all .... just as you point out Meggie, the historical background on the breed illustrates this is not an abnormal weight for a Yorkie. Many thanks. I am off to see two little girl puppies this morning - as Pepsi is now 10 years old I want to extend the family and have her influence the pups because she is such a fab dog. |
