EMERGENCY: Doggy Heimlich Maneuver I've noticed a few scary posts about choking lately, so I'm re-posting the process on how to dislodge something from your furbaby's airway. THE HEIMLICH MANEUVER FOR DOGS AND CATS The objective is to forcibly compress the lower chest in order to raise air pressure inside the chest - this should force the foreign material out of the throat or the larynx. Here's what to do: • Place the pet on its side on a hard surface. • Place both hands behind the last rib and press down quickly and firmly - release immediately and repeat rapidly several times. • Try to direct the force of your hands slightly forward - this will make your efforts more effective. • Have someone carefully open the dog's or cat's mouth wide and attempt to retrieve the material from the throat as you compress the chest. If you have a medium to large dog, here are the steps: • Straddle your dog from behind. • Put your fist just behind the last rib in the center - lifting up and forward - several quick motions. • If there is a second person, have them open the dog's mouth during this process. Once the airway is cleared, check for breathing; if the dog or cat isn't breathing, initiate artificial respiration and bring the animal to a vet's office immediately. If the animal is breathing, but damage to the airway or any other danger is suspected, get your pet to the vet asap. Great Post Admin added the FREE Poison Hotline that I found to an Emergency Sticky. This would be good there too I think! |
Thanks for the input. |
I'm glad you have this posted - I too have been concerned about Squeaky choking. He did once and it scared me so bad. Luckily he worked the piece of jerky up. Thank you so very much! |
Thanks for this |
omg one time Abby was running around like a maniac. I went to pick her up to see what was wrong and at the same time I did something went flying from her mouth and she started wheezing.. It took me a while to figure out what had just happened. I accidentally forced the object out, but I'm glad I did. it was really scary. |

Thanks! Thank you for the great post - My Yorkies have choked and I really did not know what to do - I try to make sure they don't have anything they could choke on - They love the tiny rawhide bones with the knotted ends but can't have them anymore - they get the ends off and choke on them - not worth the risk! |
Thank you for this!!! I was wondering about that!! Great info |
thanks! this has happened to my yorkie, too. My yorkie started jumping on our bed as I was falling asleep. I looked up and realized that she was choking. I remembered that my mom said you turn babies upside down to try and shake the object out. I tried that and it didn't work. I was lucky to stick my finger down her throat and get it out. It could have fallen further down her throat but I was lucky. Thank you for making everyone aware of this procedure. And don't let your yorkie play with stuffed animals which have plastic parts that may be a choking hazard. My dog had chewed the eyeball off of one of her stuffed animals. We are much more careful about what she gets to play with now. |
:thumbs up |
Scared Silly I thought I was going to lose my little girl tonight from choking. I had given Taffy a nd C.J. both a small piece of meat and was going to throw the rest away when I heard a "Thud" my husband I both turned to look and there was Taffy stiff legged shaking. I ran and picked her up and forced her mouth opened and with out thinking stuck my finger down her throat and could feel the piece of meat but I couldn't get it out I must of pushed it farther down. I took my finger out to see what I needed to do with her and she was fine then to started to lick my face and hands. Needless to say I started to cry. She is not wheezing or coughing. She seems to be just fine following me and kissing me. I totally forgot about doing the heimlich seeing her like that. It looked like she was having a grand mal siezuer. I have had them choke on rawhide and I would pat them on the lower ribs until they coughed it back up. But nothing like this, every happened before..... And, I hope it never does again. Thanks for posting the (How to Guide) Doggy Heimlich Maneuver. |
