What to Look for in Health Guarantees?
 
What should I be looking for regarding health guarantees? I have seen varying lengths from 1 year to 7 years. I assume that the longer the guarantee is, the better but I could be wrong. Is this the case?

Where are you in Ontario? I just did a ton research on Yorkies in the Toronto Area. A few offer 5 year health guarantee. Many offer 1 year. But what it really means is that they will replace the pup if anything genetic comes about. Bottom line--1 or 5 years--you are still attached the puppy. Getting another one for free doesn't really fix the loss. I have a friend that had a 5 year guarantee on the health and Leg pertheses (sp?) was diagnosed. She wound up just paying for the procedure. The breeder did nothing.

There are reputable breeders that only offer 1 year and there are reputable breeders that offer 5 years. I wanted a breeder that socialized the pups and really cared about the welfare. Let me know where you are. I might be able to pass you names.

Hi skingstone. I'm also located in Toronto. I'm sorry to hear that your friend's dog has the disease. How long did he/she have the Yorkie when it came up? Was the procedure expensive? If you can give me some names, that would be great.

I contacted a breeder about her health guarantee (she offers 1 year), and she said that health guarantees of up to five years are really just a moneymaker. Her vet helped put together her health guarantee. She said that most genetic life threatening problems occur before the age of 1. Is what she is saying correct?

I think this is true. My point about my friend is that the 5 year agreement doesn't necessarily make that much of a difference. If you talk to a breeder that offers it -- they push hard. If you talk to a breeder that offers only one year.....they say 5 year is silly. I think its most important to look at the package. Meaning: How well are the pups socialized, what standard are they breeding towards, what does the mom and dad look like, what support do you get when you take it home. There is a list of breeders in the www.dogsincanada.com. I would recommend my breeder, but she doesn't have any pups. Whom have you called so far?

Thanks for pointing out the importance of socialization and the rest of what you mentioned. I'm aware of those things already. I just want to know more about health guarantees since I don't know much about them and want to know if there's any advantage of a longer one. I'm going to PM you.
