Cold Weather Hi fellow Canadians. This will be our first winter with our baby. Last year she was so little that we pad trained...then through this summer she's being going on the pad and outside, but mostly outside. We are hoping she will revert back to the pad when it gets really cold. What do you guys do with your Yorkies in the cold weather? Do they still go outside? Do you put booties and jackets on them? Any tips would be great. Thanks. |
We have lots of sweaters and a couple of coats, t-shirts, and boots...bundle up to go out to play on the "nicer" days....Yoda is pad trained and outdoors too! I like all the cute sweaters he has and he doesn't mind wearing them! :D I cant wait to build our first snowman this winter! ;) |
Must be that time of year. There was another recent discussion on that topic that I'll link to below. Eddie goes outside summer and winter, but you have to be more alert in winter. He goes out first thing in the morning and a couple other "regular" times during the day. Beyond that, the mother in law is home when we're not, so she keeps an eye on him. Eddie's never used a pee pad, but I'd be inclined to avoid retraining your pup on that. Seems like a big step backward. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17515 |
This is my first winter with my yorkie, but I also have 2 chihuahuas. My chihuahuas hate the cold and since my yorkie, Twinkie, is just over 2 lbs she will probably hate the winter as well. They will all be using their pee pad all winter (which is the only way they are trained). I think they would all freeze their tails off if I let them out, and I don't particularly want to escort them out in the cold either! :) |

Well, we are in GA but, it still gets cold here not as cold as it does there. No longer than what my guys are out that time of the year. We may get snow 1 or 2 times. But, we do get ice. I just make sure that my guys when they come in don't have any ice on their feet. |
My Girl goes outside through the winter and it can get very cold in Alberta. I put a coat on and boots when it gets down to the minus 15 temp. She is in amd out fast. We then exercise just in the house. Joy |
Hi ppl, If my Abbey could levitate she would!! We had 10 cm of snow here in Manitoba last week and my girl Abbey (4 lbs) would not go outside.... our Boy Beamer (4lbs) took it like a great adventure running in the snow! Abbey than proceeded to "pee" right at my feet...on the carpet of course!.....so the pee pads are back on my floor!! don't know what else to do! Abbey could be tempermental as she is pregnant and due at the end of this month! they are so different in personalities! |
Hello Neighbour! I am so glad you asked this question... My two are pee pad trained and I never put the pad away because you never know when the need to go in a hurry. Being that Winnpeg is the coldest city in the world I would say that the pee pad is a must with one being pregnant! My two only go outside if the snow they pee on is lower than there bellys. So we shovel a good size spot for them. You got almost 3 feet of snow the other day! you could lose them for good in that! I can't imagine putting my little guys outside at -35 (-45 to -70 with windchill) the other day here in Regina it got to -26 with windchill and they pretty much peed on the door frame and came in, the door didn't even close. My house gets pretty cold even and I find the sweaters matte my girls hair really bad. They sleep beside a vent at night to help stay warm so I'm concerned about the cold too. |
Mine are trained to go on pee pads and outside . If the weather is too cold , they go on the pee pads . |

but mostly on the paper. Though the summer she did very well. I still kept paper down for the times in between. Today is our first day of SNOW! Sweetie is not liking the  COLD, WET, SNOW, for going outside, to do her duty! Today its the paper! |
This is Cairos first 'real' winter. She will be a year old on Sunday. She LOVES the snow and doesn't mind the snow at all. I have to bring her in. She ran outside the other day when it was -23 c with a wndchill that brought it down to -30c. I think that if she didn't have her little coat, booties and leg warmers on , she might have become an ice cube before I could persuade her back inside. I do keep her pad trained all year thuogh, it just makes life easier :) |
My munchkin goes in his litter box (no kitty litter, "yesterdays news" litter only) if its too cold, but he usually does his business quickly outside and comes back in. I recommend donning on a sweater if your pup doesn't do his business quickly. I leave a layer of snow on my porch for him to use when its super cold. Then once 'it' freezes you can scoop it up and dispose of it as usual. |
Hello Terrilyn, Congrats on the babies! How long have you been breeding? I am planning on breeding my 2 soon too but I don't know if they will. My vet said that dogs that grow up together sometimes think of each other like brother and sister... My female has had 2 heats and is 14 1/2 months old. She had her first heat at 6months and another at 10 months so I'm not sure when the next one will be but I'm guessing soon. I think they are still a little young but I think if we oops it should be o.k. I don't know if my boy knows what to do when it's not a stuffed animal.. :D My guys are getting used to the snow now and love to roll in it and come in with little snow balls all over their hair :p Tonya (Sprocket and Lady) :aimeeyork |
happy new year yorkiesX2 Quote:
Abbey free whelped, but I had a vet assistant present as well as my vet on call both for office and telephone (which we called him 3x)...may let her have another litter (still undecided)....than that would be it for Abbey! LOL.........the stuffed animal .....my gawd Beamer has a Monkey...(his hump monkey my hubby calls it).....I think on her (lady's) next heat you'll see abit more action.........how old is your boy? We used to keep our male shnauzers away from females prior to heat and during the heat.........than they paid attention to the females and they (female your breeding) would stand better for the male. We didn't have to do this with Beamer though...maybe the monkey helped ....who knows  !! Nope my two hate the snow!!..........pee pads here! Hope you had a great New Years! |
Hello Terrilyn Both my dogs are 14 months old my female 5# I got from Edmonton and my male 5.5# from Saskatoon. Sprocket's hump toy is a Saskatchewan Roughrider Gainer the Gopher lol :D He is so beat up I'm thinking of patching him to look like Leonard (Gainer's cousin). The dog's are loving the warm weather today it even rained a little (Jan 2) wow! I know it won't stay this tropical so I'm going to enjoy it. We may want to start to P.M. each other. Why did you move from Texas to Winnipeg? And how do you keep 2 horney dogs apart? :p |
