Question for the experts I just had my first litter of pups from my male. All of the pups ears are down. Is there anything that I can do to make them stand up all the time?? |
Masking tape but first you have to shave the ears and make small triangles out of the tape. when you are sticking it make sure the edge is on the pad of triangular tape you made. dont make them too stiff because it's not comfortable for the puppy, and also you have to change this everyday. also look for signs of irritation with the puppy's skin... don't make it so that it feels like the ear is in a cast, just make sure it has support. I tried this when my male was fully grown it worked for a week and then his floppy ears went back down.. I should have done it soon. One of the champions told me their ears should be up around 3 months. I hope this helps.... Ps. the triangles go on the inside of the ear, make sure nothing is in the ear it self, but you get what i'm saying right? THis is the best picture i can make on the computer maybe I should do it to my dog and take pictures for you... he's used to it... he can take them off 5 minutes after i put them on now! ears standing up Depending how old they are, at about 5 to 6 weeks you can start to tape them up. First, trim all the hair off the tips of the ears. Weight of the hair some times doesn't allow the ears to go up. Next tape them up. Wrap the tape around their ears so they are in a stand up positition. Leave up couple of days, take down, if they don't stay up, do it again. Don't worry, you will get better at this with time. This should work. Wish I'd know about this 9 years ago, when I got my first pup. |
I would not worry about their ears until they are at least 8 weeks old. Shave the top third of their ears at 4-6 weeks. If at 8 weeks they are still not standing, shave the rest of the ear. Then if that does not work in a day or two, use a breathe right strip (secured with eyelash/surgical glue) or tape them. Only my girl, Sadie's ears were not standing when I got her. I shaved the top third, nothing happened. I shaved the rest of the ear in preparation for putting the breathe rite strips in but never had to use the strips. The next morning after shaving the heavy hair off the ears, they were both standing fine. |
