Irresponsible Breeding Hi everyone, I am new on here and don't have a yorkie. I actually came for advice on someone else. A relative of mine recently bought a yorkie pup and plans to just randomly breed her. Now I have been fostering and rescuing animals for a long time as well as I am a strong supporter of responsible/ethical breeding. Nothing bugs me more than people who just randomly breed and then try to sell their critters for as much money as possible. This is precisely why my relative bought this dog. He wants to make money off of her. I know good breeders are not in it for the money (I have rescue pets and pets from breeders but I always choose to support breeders who do it right) but my relative does not get this. He is incredibly young and despite my experience, he refuses to listen about why breeding is not just something one does lightly. I do not even know that the dog is papered (even then, I know that doesn't mean much if she is) but he plans to breed her to a dog up the street. Not only that, he got the dog for $400 from some lady who 'accidently' let her own yorkie breed to the neighbors yorkie. Does anyone have any articles on what one needs to do to be a responsible breeder. I doubt the dog will see a vet honestly, nor will any testing or showing be done. I'm sure pups will go off with the highest bidder and be bred themselves. He won't listen to me at all so I'm hoping reading what others have to say might work. I apologize if this is in the wrong spot. Thanks! |
print out the information on the link in my sig line. tell him he better establish a large line of credit ;) because this will be an expensive lesson. |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk. It is great that you want to educate your relative on why not to breed their dog. Much of the information you are seeking is covered in these links which are found in the Yorkie Talk Library: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/bre...-answered.html http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/bre...t-breeder.html |

:thumbup::thumbup: Some people think "they are dogs...they have puppies all of the time!! Mother nature will take care of it." What they don't understand is that we've selectively bred yorkies down to the small size that they are. They would not appear "naturally" that way....heck, look at the yorkies of 100 years ago. They were much bigger. Same with Bulldogs....those wouldn't naturally exist as they appear today either. They have to get c-sections EVERY time they have puppies!! We are dealing with a smaller than average breed of dog...and whenever you get too far outside of "average," , it seems like the potential for complications is also greater than it is for the average dog as well. |
Take your relative to a high kill shelter, maybe that will change his mind. |
Make him look through the sick & injured section...so many Yorkies w/inherited diseases like liver shunt, luxating patellas & leggs calves perthes that need surgeries. Your relative does not know what kind of recessive genes his girl carries...she can pass on 1 or all of these conditions to her pup(s). Also, the Breeder section, so sad when we learn of the mommy passing away or a pup that didn't make it bc the owner was inexperienced & didn't know the danger signs. |

I agree 100%. Responsible breeding is not a money making venture, it includes a responsibility for maintaining breed standards, which includes knowing the pedigrees for 5 or 6 generations as well as current genetic testing for breed specific/genetically transmitted conditions as well as unexpected possibilities such as CDA, Blue borns, and other color variations that are not "standard" according to the AKC specifications. If he is not planning to follow AKC recommendations, then he just needs to have his dogs neuetred/spayed and not even entertain the thought of breeding, |
I would say mayhap the way to get through this relative of yours, is to show how and or stories that making money from one female dog, is quite like betting on the odds in a large lottery. Yorkie litters are small, and the risks are high. One C section, and one to two pups would mean, forgetting everything else, each pup would have to be sold for $500 to even cover the cost of a C section alone. And just who would buy those pups? The Kujii sites and like, are littered with Yorkie Pup ads for sale, what does he have to offer that is better than the rest? There are easier ways to make some money, then buying a female dog and hoping you will make money off of her. I don't know that morality arguments would work with this person, but maybe financial ones would. |
