How to cut droopy ears? 1 Attachment(s) Hi everyone..I am looking for ideas from any of you who have yorkies who don't hold their ears up as far as cutting the hair on their ears. Wallee has a very curly combination/ cottony coat and although it is quite the struggle to keep it up, I have let his coat grow a little. My biggest problem is trying to make him "look" like a yorkie. Because he is a Biewer to start with and with the droopy ears everyone always asks me if he is a s**tzu. I am thinking that if I saw a few pics of other pups who have their ears drooping I might get ideas for the next time the groomer comes here to cut his hair. Uggh..I just spent 2 hours bathing and brushing him out and getting out the mats. Teehee, he still looks a little scruffy but here is his pic after this ordeal. |
oops I meant to ask how to cut the hair on droopy ears. I am looking for ideas from anyone who has a yorkie with droopy ears. (Dang DH for picking the only one in the litter with ears down). |
I have seen people putting tape on their ears. I havnt done that, but someone has. |
The thread title scared me! I was thinking you meant cut droopy ears to make them stand. My DD is getting a Great Dane and they "crop" their ears to make them stand, where they actually cut out a "v" shape of their ear flesh. I'm hoping she choses not to do this... You mean shave/trim the ear hair to lessen weight & make them stand? I trim the top half of ZoE's ears, just for looks & appearance. Her ears went up naturally at around 8-9 weeks. How old is your pup? I've heard there is only a certain timeframe where the ear cartilage is still susceptible to being trained to stand up. |
Haha. I think I scared off a lot of ppl with the title. No I would never crop ears, in fact Biewers don't even have cropped tails. I know taping is not an option and we decided not to tape even when we got him last year as we don't mind that they are not up. I am just wondering about the haircut as ppl never se him as a yorkie. |
Your Wallee is adorable, he just has lazy ears :D Rufus doesn't have droopy ears but I was googleing and found a couple of pictures of biewers with droopy ears. I find that if the hair is kept short, you can see the shape of the ear and it gives them more of a yorkie look. I love the way Wallee looks! He's gorgeous. I can understand your frustration but you may have been blessed to be an educator to those not familiar with all the variations of Yorkies! LOL Love your pup!! |

I think that I would cut the hair on a droopy ear Yorkie (or Biewer) the same as I would one with erect ears. Shave down (inside and outside) about 1/3 of the way and trim the rest to the shape of the ear. |
I share your pain! 1 Attachment(s) Nilla is the same way -- cotton coat and all! When she came to me, her ears fell (I guess from the stress of a new home). I tried to tape them once, it was horrifying for me, so I said if it didn't work that time that she would just have floppy ears. So she has floppy ears. She looks, I think, super cute anyway, but I have the same problem with everyone and their grandma thinking she's a Shih-Tzu. No one wants to hear the Biewer explanation either -- I sometimes wish I had business cards with a Biewer description on them. xDDD ... but anyway. My groomers (I've tried three) have never shaved her ears down. They just trim around them, leaving them a uniform length. I don't think that they shave 1/3 of the way down though ... She has always had a fair amount of hair on her head and neck -- I did recently ask for it to be trimmed a little shorter in these areas due to a nasty tick season. I attached a picture of her with her Christmas toys. xD New computer -- it's one of the only ones that I have transferred from my cell. |

I was thinking how Woodrow from Heartland has his ears. They are basically yorkie cut without his ear standing. I think that might help. The Shih Tzu thing. Galen's ears were always up and people ask is he Shorkie  I still give them the Biewer speech. I too thought about a business card with the information to hand them lol at least I don't feel as nutty now ;) |
